The President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias will inaugurate on Tuesday 28 September 2010 a unique exhibition, organized by the Republic of Cyprus abroad. The exhibition entitled “Cyprus: Crossroads of Civilizations” will be on view at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, one of the biggest and preeminent museums in the world. The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington. The aim of the exhibition is the promotion of Cyprus in the United States on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus and on the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The exhibition covers the periods from ancient times to the Venetian period and includes archaeological objects, coins, maps, engravings and byzantine icons. For the organization of the exhibition the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cooperated with various ministries, organisations and the private sector. The Department of Antiquities, the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus, the Pierides-Marfin Bank Museum, the Thalassa Museum of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation and the Holy Bishopric of Morphou all contributed to the exhibition. The curator of the exhibition is Mr Sophocles Hadjisavvas, former Director of Cyprus Department of Antiquities.
