Why no free solar panels for Cyprus

Postby Gagman » Tue Sep 28, 2010 4:32 am

I read the U.K papers each day and a company called, 'Home Sun' is offering free solar panels and conection to sell to the Electrical Utility. With a 25 year guarantee!

Isn't there any millionaire Cypriots who could match this here?
It would help to reduce the electricity bills and use less fossil fuels. 360 days of sunshine would not be wasted and they would recover their costs within a decade and also get Government support. It would create more jobs in industry and new companies would start up due to the demand.
Hotels would benifit,as there is often lots of roof space.

I suppose millionaire Cypriots don't view the Forum?
At least it's a sound suggestion.

Not quite as wonderful as you make out.

How can HomeSun afford to reduce the cost of solar so dramatically?

In April 2010, Government introduced new laws requiring energy companies to pay for the renewable power generated by homes. These are called Feed-in Tariffs (or FiTs). It’s all part of the drive to reduce carbon emissions in the UK – a staggering 27% of which are produced from homes. With FiTs an average home could save/earn around £1k per year (look under ‘FiTs’ and Buy Solar on the site to find out more). Over 25 years, the homeowner could earn 5%-8% return. Fantastic but the homeowner still has to find the £11k upfront cost of a solar system, and be in it for the long, long term. The way HomeSun’s business works is that we fund the solar installation. Homeowners gets free electricity from the sun instantly and starts reducing their electricity bills; HomeSun receives the FiTs to recoup its investment and make a sustainable profit. If at any point, the homeowner wants to buy out of the contract and take the FiT contract, they can – there are no penalties, it’s just a straight line depreciation from day 1 to the end of the contract. Simple. We think that makes a great partnership.

So basically you are providing them with your roof for them to make money.

I think it's not unusual to have 'promotions' where they are trying to persuade people to take up using something. (Fondly remembering when they were more or less giving away mobile phones and the contracts were dirt cheap!) But there are already lots of people using solar panels in Cyprus.

When I asked why some of the newer developments didn't have solar panels I was told it was because the (mostly) ex pat Brits who they were hoping would buy them did not like all that 'clutter on the roof' and wanted pointy pitched roofs like wot they have back home! They are prepared to pay more for heating and hot water and have their house looking prettier. I do not disbelieve that.

We specifically asked about solar panels, insulation and recycling grey water when ours was being built... We were met with blank stares...

I can't believe anybody that has a Cypriot home with solar water panels and tanks on the roof and numerous air conditioning compressors bolted on the walls would complain about some PV panels in exchange for cheaper lecky! :x

In Australia there was a rebate of up to $8000 in some cases is granted to home owners who instal PV cells on their roof. A 1.5 kW PV system backed up by a solar hotwater system and gas heating/cooking means your power bill will be bugger all and in some cases you actaully get a cheque if the PV cells feed into the power grid and they produce power in excess of your power needs. The rebate has been some what wound back now.

I don't understand why Rain water tanks are not used more widely to harvest water in Cyprus. Surely rebates perhaps from the EU could be established. Many aquifers are now being flooded by Sea water in Cyprus because of unregulated raping of the aquifers through illegal drilling and collection of bore water. In many countries all new houses must have rain water collection tanks which in some times can store more than 20,000 Litres or more. Schools are given rebates to instal even larger tanks. They fill up after a single storm and make water that would be run off into the sea available for most of the dry months.

We have a solar panel on the roof which gives us really hot water in the summer but we have to back up in winter with the immersion heater but it is a considerable saving so suggesting we wanted "a nice pointy roof like back home" is a typical stupid anti british remark and once again a sensible post is used as an opportunity at Brit bashing.Well done you bunch of racist, small minded pillocks.
