Sad fate of Cypriot culture at the hands of the invaders.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Sad fate of Cypriot culture at the hands of the invaders.

Postby lola-tulip » Mon Sep 27, 2010 12:29 pm

It is a very sad fact that above and beyond all the suffering our Cypriot brothers endure whilst our land is occupied, that we must also face the fate of an everlasting loss of thousands of years of cultural heritage.

Cyprus' cultural heritage continues to be heavily pillaged despite international agreements concerning its protection - as a result of the Turkish invasion of 1974.

The intelligent world is hungry for our shared history.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Demetris Christofias will inaugurate on Tuesday 28 September 2010 a unique exhibition.

The exhibition entitled “Cyprus: Crossroads of Civilizations” will be on view at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington (photo), one of the biggest and preeminent museums in the world.

Let us hope the German court orders demanding the return of Cypriot treasures are adhered to.

BREAKING NEWS • Mon, Sep 27, 2010
A German court has ordered the repatriation of priceless Cypriot treasures, stolen from Cyprus’ northern Turkish occupied part of the country.

A press release, issued by the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus, says that in 2004 the Republic of Cyprus, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Church of the Maronites and the Church of the Armenians filed a civil law suit before Munich District Court to retrieve stolen antiquities, which had been in the custody for the Bavarian authorities since 1997.

The said antiquities were located in 1997 by the Bavarian police, hidden in between walls and under the floor of two flats which belong to a Turkish national, Aydin Dickmen, in Munich. Part of the findings include religious icons, part of mosaics and pieces of Byzantine frescoes of priceless historic, cultural and religious value.

Since these were located, the government and the Church of Cyprus had made several moves to have these artifacts repatriated. The moves did not yield any results and it was decided to file a civil law suit before the German courts. On Thursday, 23 September, Munich District Court issued its decision on the law suit against Dickmen which vindicated fully the Church of Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus.

“The Court ruling puts an end to a difficult and hard legal battle, which lasted six years, by ordering the return of our cultural heritage treasures,” the press release said. It added that the Court ruling is subject to appeal.

Appeal? On what possible grounds can they appeal??

The items were proven stolen, held illegally by another authority and the court has ruled for them to be returned.

I know, I know, appeals are part of the justice system, what a load of bollocks.

In cases such as these, there are no grounds and the presiding judge should say so and recommend no appeal be made.

Good news indeed, now, what about the hundreds of items missing and all these Tr troops and settlers, when are they going to be returned and removed respectively.

Cheers

It would be good to see historic artifacts displayed in Cypriot museums - rather than some forign country. I am happy that they will be returned to where they belong! :D

What's this pollocks about returning these great works of art to Cyprus? ...

.... to again expose them to the lack of care in looking after them by one community so that they can again be pinched by the other community and flogged off on the World's Black Markets???

There is a natural and safe home for them by way of a semi-permanent loan to the CY Republic of North London's Museum in Bloomsbury, where they will be available for scholarly study and viewing by a World-wide audience, thereby promoting CY Culture far more widely than stashing them away in some black hole of an alleged museum in the minor provincial centre that is Nicosia.

You all know it makes sence.
