This reminds me of that comedy movie called the Four Lions: You don't get it! Bomb a mosque which will radicalize the moderates! Maaashaalaaaaaa (and the audience laughs).

Retired general confesses to burning mosque to fire up public

Retired Gen. Sabri Yirmibeşoğlu

http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/news- ... ublic.html

A retired general who has recently been accused of having conducted an assassination attempt on the life of Turkey's eighth president, Turgut Özal, has inadvertently confessed that he ordered the burning of a mosque as part of psychological warfare operations in 1974.

In remarks published in the Haber Türk daily yesterday as part of an interview with Gen. Sabri Yirmibeşoğlu, who led the Special War Department in 1971 and also worked to mobilize civilian resistance during Turkey's military intervention on Cyprus in 1974, said: “In Special War, certain acts of sabotage are staged and blamed on the enemy to increase public resistance. We did this on Cyprus; we even burnt down a mosque.” In response to the surprised correspondent's incredulous look the general said, “I am giving an example,” in an attempt to clear things up.

The retired general is also believed to have wide-ranging information concerning many alleged crimes and activities of behind-the-scene organizations such as JİTEM. He was also implicated in the Sept. 6-7, 1955 pogrom in İstanbul against minorities, which today is widely believed to have been part of a manipulative plan concocted by Ergenekon-like structures. Yirmibeşoğlu has admitted that the Sept. 6-7 events were organized by the Special War Department, documented by journalist Fatih Güllapoğlu in his book “Operation with No Tanks or Arms.” In the book, Yirmibeşoğlu is quoted as saying, “Sept. 6-7 is the work of Special War [department], and it is a spectacular organization.” In the interview with Haber Türk, Yirmibeşoğlu also attempted to clarify this point. He partially denied what was in the book saying, “In 1971 I was assigned as the senior [head] of the Special War Department. At the time, there was actually no department called the Special War Department, there was only the Mobility Investigation Board that was set up for Cyprus.”

The confession brings to mind the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) coup plot, allegedly drafted by a clique in the military to undermine the government. Dozens of military officers were arrested, although most were later released during the investigation into the Sledgehammer document, which includes plans to bomb the Fatih and Beyazıt mosques and down a Turkish jet over the Aegean to fuel problems with Greece with the ultimate aim of discrediting the government.

When allegations regarding the Sledgehammer plan first arose after the document was leaked to the press earlier this year, then-Chief of General Staff Gen.İlker Başbuğ dismissed the accusations as nonsense. Başbuğ said a military whose troops are known for shouting “Allah Allah” as they attack the enemy could not possibly think of burning the house of God. However, Yirmibeşoğlu’s revelation shows that this has actually been done before.

For this bit:

"‘işlerini ciddiye alıp hizaya girmeleri” için evlerinin yakınına birkaç bomba attırdığını’ itiraf etmişti."

If as you (or D) claim, only one mosque was bombed; then which one?

[Kindly decide on which were bombed and which were arsoned.]

Pleased to meet you too Lola-Tulip! But allow me to express couple of things...

Firstly, the above quote does not refer to mosques, but to having bombs thrown outside their(?) homes so as to make them(?) take their business serious. I have not read this bit and I am not sure the quote refers to anything that took place in North Cyprus. I would be happy if someone quotes me a direct link to this...

Second thing is - I do not write fantasies or "beliefs" as you preferred to put it in your next post. Mosques, tombs were destroyed and dozens of TC villages were wiped out off the map between 1963 and 1966 (until the evil napalm bombs in Koccina brought sense to Grivas and his followers). THESE ARE UNDENIABLE FACTS! To this day we are talking about "lost persons" - hundreds of young TCs disappeared and are still classified as "lost" after the 1963 attacks! BUt of course you are not taught these at school are you?

I was a very young boy living in Nicosia during that time and remember clearly, the minaret of Bayraktar mosque (not far from your end of Ledra street) was brought down by a bomb for the second time! THE FİRST TIME WAS EVEN BEFORE THE ACCELERATION OF INTERCOMMUNAL CONFLICT - BACK IN 1962!

Between 1963 and 1974, 103 mosques and other Turkish-Islamic shrines and antiquities all around the island were deliberately destroyed by the Greek Cypriots. You are asking for examples? Below are a few to set you on your way:

The historic Bayraktar Mosque, which stands as a symbol of centuries-old Turkish-Islamic heritage of the island, has been the target of bombing and arson attacks over the years. It was bombed in 1962 and again in 1964. It sustained an arson attack in February 1994.

The 400-year-old Araplar Mosque was attacked with explosives in March 1994.

The historic Omeriye Mosque was the target of an arson attack in August 1996 that damaged its historic structure.

In August 1999, the Hala Sultan Tekke, a most prominent holy shrine for the Muslim world, came under attack when its door was forced open by Greek Cypriot arsonists who poured petrol over the interior surface and set it ablaze.

Do not worry about agent provocateurs which axisted on both sides! The major damage was more from the other side...

As for burning down a mosque, it is neither here nor there and it certainly was not the start or cause of the internal conflict in Cyprus. As someone else said - it may not even be true! Which mosque, when and where?

This guy is trying to save his neck by playing with people's nationalistic feelings to justify worse actions in Turkey! He has nothing to lose by such unproven/unsubstantiated claims but a lot to gain since he may be facing many years behind bars! The message he is trying to convey to the nationalists is "It is no crime to throw a bomb here and a bomb there to get those who disagree with us in line! We even burnt a mosque in Cyprus in the name of national interest". Again, has anyone said which mosque and exactly when?

a statement in the concerned Zaman newspaper (I just came accross) proves my last pont in previous post even more so!

......the investigation into the Sledgehammer document, which includes plans to bomb the Fatih and Beyazıt mosques and down a Turkish jet over the Aegean to fuel problems with Greece with the ultimate aim of discrediting the government.

Some stupid fools do not have the intelligence , very little required , to realize that what contributes to keeping the T/A in Cyprus is their warped and violence induced views. Do they really think that the T/A will just pack up and leave when comments such as those of chief plonker GR are read ?

But you will agree that actions by fanatics from both sides have no limit. An extremist , as witnessed today by the suicide bombers , will undertake any act regardless how vile and hideous such act is in order to satisfy his hatred for the other side. There no angels amongst fanatics only evil.

I agree 100%! :D

The post was intended for those GC angels who are in constant denial of historic facts when it concerns their share of stupid fanatics stirring shit! No disrespect to you but I also agree there are quite a few in this forum too - hence my decision to post not as often... :)

Mr spin missed the point...

doing terrible things to each other is understandable, not condonable...this little relevation is not about blowing up a mosque, is further proof the turks had their eye on cyprus long ago, and the pretext they came to save the tcs is hogwash...

similar tactics in 1955...riot mentality and feeding the chooks with mis-information...

surely one has to ask...what else have they done apart from blowing up a mosque?

Well part of the answer to Boomer's question may be in the link that Insan gave us yesterday...

http://human-rights-archaeology.blogspo ... -1963.html (perhaps not the most credible of sources, but as Insan cited it, he should follow it up).

Did ask Insan to give us a tally of the incidents reported there, but am still waiting.

Bill, I've clearly made my point regarding my post... imo, it's pointless to give you a tally of the incidents... Why? What difference does it make? The extremists and their leaderships did such activities as many times as they thought it was required in order to reach their goal...

Such tactics were used all around the world during those times under the similar circumstances...

I condemn every action that target the innocent human life but on the other hand have the ability to analyze issues in their own special circumstances... This does not mean I'm trying to excuse the actions of TMT, EOKA or EOKA-B... yes, even EOKA-B... Once i tried to examine and analyze the actions of EOKA-B in frame of criminology...
