NICOSIA - Nashi, a new fruit to Cyprus and cultivated in Kyperounta village, was officially presented on Thursday in Nicosia by Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Demetris Eliades.
Eliades said Nashi was good for the heart and the digestive system, and was considered one of the most nutritious in the world.
The fruit, native to Japan, was cultivated by Cypriot farmers, who a few years ago imported and planted the plants on the slopes of the mountainous area of Kyperounta, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture encourages such efforts and stands ready to support farmers who wish to follow new paths.
The Minister said Nashi was the seventh in a series of 19 super foods, which are rich in antioxidants, phyto-phenols, aminoacids, vegetable fibres, trace elements and other elements necessary for long-term health.
He added that Nashi plantations were created after many efforts, which included viability studies on an international basis, and that the plants were imported from California.
Speaking on behalf of the cultivators, Solomos Argyrou said that the climate in Kyperounta was considered to be the most appropriate for producing the fruit, adding that so far only 5% to 10% of the local farmers grow Nashi.
He also said that the fruit could be refrigerated for up to four months and that studies were being carried out to determine the processing potential of the fruit to produce jam and liquor.
