Why don't you ever talk about peace?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Why don't you ever talk about peace?

Postby CyprusNewsReport » Tue Sep 21, 2010 12:28 pm

Why don't you ever talk about peace? Why are the posts always about war and hatred and bitterness? Don't you know that you are all individually responsible for communal relations and as long as you decide to remain enemies - you will!

When will you look forwards instead of backwards?

Simple answer to that is, the Turks demand whats not theirs and want to run roughshod over us.

Communal relations start with respecting human and democratic rights, something the Turks know nothing about. When you have 40,000 heavily armed foreign troops pointing guns as you with daily threats from the more powerful country nearby, how can you think of anything else.

Your question(s) should be directed to the Turks not the the GCs.

Turkey should not be pointing their guns, their troops are here illegally and they should go home.

But their threats can only be a threat to peace if we allow it to be. The dictatorship of a military threat will not prevent me from being on a friendly basis with the average person from the Turkish-Cypriot community. This threat will not twist me into enmity with my neighbor.

I direct my question at people from both communities. We've inherited this situation, we're the only people who are going to do anything about it.

There is no peace whilst there is a threat.

The world is full of threats, it's our choice whether we allow them to kill our free will and aggressively turn on each other.

I've spoken to plenty of Turkish Cypriots who are unhappy that the Turkish army is still camping out on the island. Let's face it, Turkish troops in Cyprus are redundant, illegal and nobody here wants them except the extreme nationalists.

Yes, the Turkish troops are an obstacle to peace, but all the rest of our obstacles are psychological, political and cultural divisions which are our choice to adopt or reject. But why should we choose divisions over peaceful co-existence? I don't see any long-term benefit.

so in peace`s name we should be cowards , we should say from now on we need no trouble so we will leave matters as it is !! well it doesnt work that way im afraid you cant ignore unsolved problems cause as long you will live it will always be unsolved and till the problem is need solved there will be no peace !!

and realistically peace is an ideal world and idealism and realism arent the same thing

I only have two words to answer whether peace is idealistic - European Union. After 64 million people died in world war two, it finally knocked some sense into European leaders and they started the EU to make sure such wanton destruction never happened again.

So it's not idealistic to expect peace, it's realistic and more importantly - crucial for our survival.

I'm not ignoring the problems, I'm pointing out that we think in a very polarised way - US and THEM, and this is a limited way to seeing the world. Fresh ideas, new approaches, that's what we need to move ahead and look forward.

I was at the Nicosia District Office this morning and judging from the number of Turkish Cypriots applying for ID Cards and passports, they are not expecting much of an outcome from the present talks. There were also a large number of ID cards waiting to be collected, and the vast majority were for TCs.

Whilst I agree that we should be looking forward, it is very difficult for many people to forget the past.
