President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias departs for New York to participate in the UN General Assembly and to have a series of meetings from September 19 to 27.
According to his draft programme, President Christofias will be arriving in New York on Sunday and will attend a dinner hosted by President of the Cyprus Federation of America Peter Papanicolaou.
On September 20, the opening of the High Level Plenary Meeting on Millennium Development Goals will be held, followed by the High Level Plenary Meeting, addressing the challenge of poverty, hunger and gender equality.
The President will also host a luncheon for the permanent representatives of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, and will have a meeting with the Director of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law and Justice of the New York University Joseph Weiler.
He will also attend a reception hosted by the Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel on the occasion of the High Level Plenary Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals of the 65th General Assembly.
On September 21, the High Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on Millennium Development Goals will be held. Furthermore, President Christofias will meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, and will hold a bilateral meeting with President of Serbia Boris Tadic and a luncheon meeting with the American Jewish Committee.
On September 22, the opening of the High Level Meeting on Biodiversity will be held. President Christofias will hold a bilateral meeting with President of Croatia Ivo Josipovic, and will also meet with Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou.
Later on in the day, the closing of the High Level Plenary Meeting on Millennium Development Goals will be held with the adoption of a political declaration by the heads of state and government, followed by the closing of the High Level Meeting on Biodiversity.
On September 23, the opening of the General Debate of the 65th Session of the General Assembly of the UN will be held, and the UN Secretary General will present his report on the work of the Organisation.
President Christofias will hold a bilateral meeting with President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvilli, and will attend an official luncheon hosted by the UN Secretary General in honour of heads of state and government.
Later on there will be a continuation of the general debate of the 65th Session of the General Assembly of the UN. There will also be a special lecture followed by a reception hosted by the Cyprus Tourism Organization and the Archaeological Institute of America titled ``From Cyprus with Love: Tales of Romance on Aphrodite’s Island`` in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus. Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou will attend the event on behalf of President Christofias.
President Christofias will be attending a reception hosted by US President Barack Obama.
On September 24, the opening of the High Level Review of Mauritius Strategy will be held to assess progress made in addressing the vulnerabilities of small island developing states through the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.
Later on, President Christofias will be giving a press conference at UN headquarters.
Furthermore, the general debate of the 65th Session of the General Assembly of the UN will be continued.
President Christofias will hold a bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov and will be the eighth speaker to address the 65th Session of the General Assembly.
Furthermore, the President will be addressing the Ranieri Colloquium on Ancient Studies hosted by the New York University Center for Ancient Studies.
Later on, a reception will be hosted by the Cyprus Embassy Trade Center, and an Annual Awards Gala will be hosted by the Cyprus Federation of America, followed by dinner, honoring Dr. Panagiotis Manolas, MD, FACS with the Philanthropic Award and George James Tsunis with the Justice for Cyprus Award.
On September 25, the general debate of the 65th Session of the General Assembly of the UN will be continued.
President Christofias will hold a meeting with the Board Members of the Cyprus Federation of America, and the closing of the High Level Review of Mauritius Strategy will be held with the adoption of a political declaration.
On September 26, President Christofias will visit the St. Basil Academy.
On September 27, President Christofias will meet with Secretary for Relations with the States of the Holy See Domenique Mamberti.
Furthermore, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Demetris Droutsas will address the 65th Session of the General Assembly.
The President and his entourage will be departing for Washington later on the same day.
