More light regarding the naval activity in Cyprus and trade in the Aegean during classical antiquity. Underwater archaeological research in the ancient commercial vessel sinking off Mazotos, near Larnaca, 45 meters in depth.
The merchant ship of the late classical era was loaded from end to end with hundreds of amphorae contained wine, mostly from Chios and other islands of the northern Aegean.
The importance of the wreck is that the jars are not dispersed, but remained just as it was loaded on deck after the sinking of the vessel.
After photographic documentation and design of the site of the wreck, amphorae and other items were transferred to the Museum of Larnaca, where maintenance will be done by the Department of Antiquities.
Apart from amphorae found two bars of lead and scrap wood, which formed a part of the ship's anchors.
Of particular interest is the welfare of seafarers of antiquity shows the number of olives, found on board, which were probably supplies for food for the crew.
The investigation of the wreck made by the Archaeological Research Unit, University of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.
