HELLIM – A PRODUCT OF TRNC

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

GR!'s taste buds are shot, due to his heavy smoking! That would be the only reason why he would prefer the taste of anything Turkish!

"Same as that Greek yogurt shit......I am not objecting to the Greek part but the tasteless mess that it is...."

Greek or Cypriot yoghurt? The two are not at all similar, they are so different as to be different products.

And with all due respect to goat and sheep admirers in here, Greek cowsmilk yoghurt really is a class item, no wonder it is world famous. Only shortcoming is that it is useless for making talatouri.

In favor and manufactured is what makes it irritating!

If we never question it we'll be talking Ottoman mythology all day!

Why should i lie? I many times stated that GC coffee tastes far better than the TC coffee and so many TCs prefer to buy GC coffee... if it was the same for the GC halloumi, I would honestly told it...

One more thing to add; this year the TC cultivated tomatoes were very bad... My friend who own a restaurant bought hundreds of kilos tomatoes from South but i have no idea weather they were imported or not...

There's nothing to hide and be embarrassed of... truths are truths...

I don’t lie either… I’ve never heard of anyone go on about Halloumi being better/cheaper/whatever in the “TRNC”.

But I did hear from one idiot that would travel from Kornos to fill up with fuel because it was cheaper there, and when I mentioned the fuel he was consuming to get there and back I got a blank stare!

Cigarettes were cheaper early on but they didn’t have my brand... but I’ve no idea these days.

Finally, what tastes absolutely delicious and better from the “TRNC”, is those tin boxes full of mini paglava! Yum!

Paklava in tin boxes? :? I've neither heard nor seen...

Another Greek invention   Oracle will be proud of our GR.

Sorry Nikitas but I have yet to taste a Greek yogurt that tastes that it is ALIVE and good for you. A processed product that sits along side other processed and tasteless products from around the world that are equally popular to a tasteless society.

To each his own. If you want live yoghurt you can buy it in clay containers, full fat, sheep milk stuff with the characteristic skin. The taste of sheep milkfat is not a favorite but it must be popular because it is stocked in most outlets. The yoghurt variety available in Greece is staggering- 0 fat, 2%, 10%, full fat, from sheep, goat or cow and from dozens of makers. It is one of the few foodstuffs that can be delivered to your house like milk is in the UK.

What you cannot get in Greece is regular watery (undrained) Cypriot yoghurt which is the only one that makes decent talatouri. Note talatouri, NOT tzatziki which is something totally different and unknown in Cyprus when I was growing up. Tzatziki should be lumped together with feta and salty halloumi and banned.

feta sucks bigtime. It is salt with some milk added, so is brined halloumi. The brine has to be saturated to the point that it will float an egg inorder to be right for preserving. That is more salty than seawater, what fool would drink seawater!

Is something changed in the meantime?

There is something wrong with your information Epsilon, even Turkey has several brands of Hellim, and don't forget the Arabic and Egyptian stuff.

I think this whole "registering" traditional goods that have been all over the place for centuries, by one single country, is utter bollocks.

What is the point, seriously?

Nothing of course since cousine is usually a mixture of experiences. However i have to support my part of Cyprus ownership!!!

No matter what, there is NOTHING like picking your own olives and taking some for oil, last year we had 20 ltrs ,from just a few trees, this year will be better roll on 26 sep for picking, the rest cracked with a stone with garlic and cori, and eaten on a sunny morning with your local shepherds hellim made with only goat and sheep milk (no cows rubbish) and not to much salt ,,,bliss :D
