How many millions of Euros (or could it be billions?) are owed by developers to the CY Treasury? Sums that ain't due 'til the title transfer process is started? How many schools and general hospitals or roads or health-care or even arms for defence etc etc would those ball-park amounts buy?

If am right goes to show the power of the developer lobby and the ineptitude and weakness of government in the face of it, when it doesn't act to make a small change to the law and, amongst benefits to house purchasers, collect taxes due.

Even more generally where does this fiasco leave the CY economy? Is it sitting on a time-bomb because of wider implications, given the sums that may be involved in this mess?

You are a brave man indeed BC to be able to tell the truth like that without the usual criticism and condemnation from certain corners of the cf. (small letters as Thats how much the cf is valued now.)

Gosh... very kind of you to say so D. ... Sure almost all will appreciate honest talking on this scammy matter which has brought so much disrepute to CY and endless worry to very ordinary people who have worked for their little place in the Sun. There's no place in this one for ill-placed nationalism or patriotism.

Charming GR! You really have lost every shred of credibility here haven't you?

If am right goes to show the power of the developer lobby and the ineptitude and weakness of government in the face of it, when it doesn't act to make a small change to the law and, amongst benefits to house purchasers, collect taxes due.

Agree. And as the Govt would benefit - it can only be as you say - the power of the 'developer lobby'. You can see that displayed on here with some defending the indefensible where large developers are concerned. They are large, they are well established, they therefore must be LILY WHITE!

Yeah right!

Slowly but surely it is changing. And we now not only have warnings about buying property in the 'TRNC' we have official warnings everywhere about buying property ANYWHERE in Cyprus - and quite rightly so.

And it makes me smile to see those who gloated and crowed about the warnings about buying North (with all the 'what do you expect from a corrupt and illegal state) now DEFENDING the self same corrupt practices by developers, lawyers and estate agents in the South!

Okay I've been following this blog for a while now and simply can't resist to put my two cents in. Think about it. Who in their right mind would buy a property that doesn't have a title deed and why? It's almost like buying property in the occupied areas. You take a gamble, maybe save some money, or maybe lose some. A few years ago I had the opportunity to buy a nice big 4 bedroom villa in Pissouri complete with a 900 sq meter plot and swimming pool for a mere Euro 350K. A real bargain and I was ready to snap it up till I heard that there were no title deeds. The owner assured me that the developer (ironically his name when translated to English means "crooked") promised the deeds would be ready by the end of the year. I terminated all negotiations when I learned there were no title deeds since I wasn't willing to gamble my hard earned cash. I do sympathize with all those who are caught up in the mess, but if it's too good to be true it probably is! If anyone is interested I have a 3 bedroom penthouse in the new Etko towers for sale. Only 100,000 Euro. No title deeds, no paper work and I only take cash. But you can trust me........

According to the statistics - over 100,000 Cypriots would (and DID) As for WHY - they probably appreciated more than most that 'that's just the way it is done in Cyprus'.

Interesting to watch what was considered 'quaint and quirky' and 'hey! It's the Cypriot way', now turn into illegal and dishonest.

Of course the change came about when the property bubble burst and the developers (who thought it would go on forever) started being strapped for cash. True colours showed through.
