GC National Guard purpose

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I would expect this downsize to happen if the Cyprob is solved, no need to have so many soldiers & weapons.

GR & B25... take it easy! We are just examining the facts here. If you believe the Turks will attack again then why are we talking to them? Let's attack them first! Is this what you want? Just because we are majority on the island does not give us the right to "bully" the other side. We should do this first step in order to achieve peace and most importantly "trust". The TC side wants the Turkish troops to remain for their security. This might sound like a joke to us but not to them. While the Turkish troops are stationed on the island, there can not be a solution, period.

I would sit back & take a good look at this issue. In some countries like Swiss, there was a referendum to abolish the army all together but after the 9/11 events the idea was scrapped. And yeah, I know, they don't have the Turks on the fence...

Further evidence that Americans/Canadians are seriously fucked in the head!

They think it’s “cool” for the US to send 2,000 vehicles, 500 planes, 150,000 soldiers, and an armada, to defeat a 3rd world country, but a half invaded/occupied country like Cyprus needs to tone down its military! :?

Dude, just go get a few beers and some crack and leave Cyprus to us... thanks!

We are not talking about attacking anyone, but we need some defence capability for gods sake.

What about all the wealth this side of the line, banks, governments, infrastructure, who will look after them?

We have an emeny ay the door, and you want us to down arms?? God some people are so stupid.

Instead of petitioning the enemy to down arms and get off our island, you seek to suggest we should pull down our trousers and bend for this stinking turks re??

Get out of my face before I really say something I may regret.

TC666= Yfuck, go fuck yourself. You'll do better on the Crap44 forum where all your little cronies will agree with you and make you feel big.

Georgios, people like you make me ashamed to be GC, its not enough we have the turks to worry about, now we got our own.

What a STUPID thread!!!!

Don't forget, that without a Military, Cyprus will be unable to defend vital natural resources interests within its EEZ. No NAVY or Cyprus National Guard Air Wing, then no OIL and no GAS.

No MILITARY = No Country

Not only is the CNG vital for defence, claiming an EEZ, anti terrorism, and surveillance, but defence expenditure should be at least doubled, if not be between 6-10% of GDP. Get rid of some useless public servants instead.

Also, the S-300s MUST be re-deployed in Cyprus, and Cyprus should procure the more capable S-400s from Russia, purchase more Russian attack choppers [Mi-28] and Anti Ship and area Air Defence missile carrying Fast Attack Craft and also consider the acquisition of 3-4 Corvettes. In other words, there needs to be a very rapid expansion of Sea and Air elements, and more investment into Special Forces such as OYK.

Furthermore, Cyprus needs to expand on its strategic alliance with Israel, and invest in more Israeli Military technologies such as the Heron UAV and perhaps participate in some joint consortiums. Investment is also required in missile carrying UAVs such as the Predator. Israel will be by far, the nation's most important strategic ally within the next four years, and Cyprus will naturally, by extension be able to be an excellent medium or bridge between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Far better to have alliances with Israel than rely on that bitch of a country called Greece, which has just capitulated in the Aegean.

If we start behaving like Greece, then we don't deserve a country!!!

Is this army needed?

To fight whom?

Is the expenditure justified?

The only enemy is Turkey. If Turkey decides to "take" the rest of Cyprus, who can defend it? The National Guard? Realistically, we don't stand a chance at "winning" this war.

I would think downsizing the National Guard by 50% and reducing the enlistment to 1 year could prove more effective and cost efficient.

Georgios100

In addition, the reduction may send a message to the TC side who really worry about security.

Cyprus is a small country to sustain a National Guard of the current size. The reduced guard can always back-up the police force in emergencies and national disasters.

Acquiring offensive weapons (tanks, S300 etc) does not help the cause... the money saved can be used for much needed infrastructure and social programs instead.

george how about asking the 50,0000 turkish troops this question first ..

are you serious "tc side who really worry about security""

stick to wind mills mate....................

Amen to that re. distixos exoumen tzie vlakes stin plevra mas.

As I have said this before, when the day comes that Turkey/UK/US/France/Israel and every other nation removes its NG, then we will do the same, until then, don't make seriously pathetic suggestions, not even in jest.

Reduction of the force does not mean abolishment.

Further military purchases relating to long range missiles (S-400) means aggression, not defensive mode.

Unlike many that think defence, Turkey thinks of us as a thread (having missiles that can reach Ankara). FYI, the suggested S-400 acquisition is an indirect "act of war". At least, this was the Turkish opposition during the S-300 situation. Provoking war is as stupid as declaring it.

Who, on this board, thinks a war is coming to Cyprus?
When is this thread to happen?
Who will attack?

Give me real answers not assumptions.

I am listening...

I empathise with you,Georgio, but don't expect the same from those who cannot think within the box let alone outside it...Some think if they wait long enough they might catch Turkey off guard and win a war against her...Others are deluded enough to believe they are safeguarding the EU's Eastern front...You are spot on,if you want Turkey to pull some or all her troops back you need to give them the psychological motivation to do so...Imagine the international pressure on Turkey to pull most of her troops back if the ROC declared a unilateral demilitarisation...But save your breath, the fanatics who have brought us the EOKA,TMT,Enosis, and Taksim will not stop till our beloved Cyprus is totally devastated...And that day is sooner than you think... :( :(

Turkey is OBLIGED by international law to fully withdraw her forces whereas the RoC is both OBLIGED by law to protect her citizens and HAS THE RIGHT to bear arms as a sovereign UN member.

So, don’t EVER expect Cypriot citizens to give up their right to self defense to accommodate your fascist Turkish schemes on Cyprus!

YOU WILL NEVER GET YOUR WAY!

If you cared so much about the welfare of Cyprus you'd all fuck off back to Turkey where you belong!

See what I mean,dear Georgio???
There is no one as blind as he who refuses to see...
Obviously all the present and past "obligations" have failed to reduce the Turkish Army numbers in Cyprus even by ONE soldier...But would they consider a different approach??? NOOOOOOOOOOO...iT IS THEIR WAY OR THE HIGHWAY...
