Cyprus take on Portugal away from home today in the first qualification match for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine 2012.
I will be watching the match online and will give back to you my opinions on proceedings etc for those of you that won't be able to watch the match.
Expectations wise for the match and the campaign are as follows from myself.
The Match - Portugal are a strong side at home even without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo and are sure fire favorites for the 3 points. Cyprus didn't register one win in the 2010 WC qualifiers in away matches however they managed a few draws though I cannot really see that result today. If they can pressure the Portugese and withstand the pressure of an away match then getting a goal will be seen as a positive step today.
The campaign - After the what you could heroics of the WC campaigns Cyprus will be looking to build on the success and also wipe out the kind of errors that were made in that campaign (Italy at home and away anyone?). If they can pick up a few points away from home and hopefully hold on to leads they may get then the future will begin to look bright. With this current squad of players it is now or never for them with the age of the squad creeping towards the 30 mark.
