My Restaurant and Hotel reviews !

Postby miltiades » Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:37 am

Being an ardent lover of food and wine coupled with the fact that I consider Cyprus Hotels to be amongst the best in the world I thought I would start a review based on my own experiences in staying and eating at Hotels and Restaurants in Cyprus. I have made notes on many aspects and on returning to London tomorrow morning will collate and review.
I will start with a restaurant I visited yesterday with my brother in law an ex UK citizen aptly named ...Charlie, he had eaten there before and assured my that it was well worth a visit.
The FORSOS TAVERN Restaurant is situated in the village of MOUTAYIAKA very close to Limassol and just a little further from YERMASOYIA , there is no street name or number on the Restaurant card I took so I presume every one knows the FORSOS , a rather unusual name I thought with an unassuming street entrance up a few stairs and surprise surprise a setting well worth a visit.
We were welcomed at the entrance by the young owner who knew Charley , apparently everyone knows Charley in and around Limassol , he run a supermarket opposite the sea at Kanika Sea Forum area and was well known for his humour , cordiality and great personality.
The restaurant area was straight ahead in the courtyard set amongst what looked like and indeed it was , an olive grove , tables set under the olive trees laden at this time with olives almost ready for the pick, and ....fans spinning away bringing in much needed coolness .
I was impressed that such traditional settings were still available in Cyprus since most have given way to bad copies of Western Restaurants, we shall come to this later on , so was very pleasantly surprised and very much looked forward to my meze !!
We started with a large beer each , ordered our meze and not long after a plate containing ROCCA, CUCUMBER, TOMATO , SPRING ONIONS RADDISHES AND OLIVES appeared along with steaming hot Pitta bread.
I'm a lover of such vegetables/salads and tucked into them with sheer delight. A minute later and the dips arrived , tarama , houmus , tsaziki , tachi and lovely yogurt. My taste buds were by now in full action , those tsakistes elies were so tasty I asked for more , almost felt that I could reach up and cut some from the olive tree we were sitting under.
Soon many people begun to arrive , I said Charley that for a Monday evening the restaurant seems to be quite busy , it seats about 100 so it was not long before the restaurant was pretty full with the young waitresses rushed off their feet while an elderly waiter was balancing 10 plates on one hand as he served the tables.
Grilled halloumi and lountza soon arrived along with grilled and very tasty loukanica.
So far every thing was to our entire satisfaction and with our stomachs in an excited state we begun to celebrate the happenings with a bottle of white wine , cold and crispy dry it complemented the meal delightfully.
Further down and the chicken and pork kebabs arrived along with Kioftedes , one of my favourite Cypriot delicacies.
I ASKED FOR SOME ONIONS , US SINGLE ..BOYS DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT EATING ONIONS , CHARLY DECLINED DIDNT WANT TO CAUSE A RIFT BETWEEN HE AND HIS YOUNG ...BRIDE TO BE ( Capitals are so because I forgot and did not want repeat ! )
The onions must have been home grown and tasted sharp and hot !
More followed by which time I only had room for liquids , Charley on the other hand had to satisfy his ...enormous body , he is around 140 kg !!!

The evening continued with fresh watermelon , fruit and Lokmades , alas although I love lokmades being a diabetic meant I could only eat a ....dozen or so !!
We finished our drinks and it was time to go home. The bill was very reasonable I thought it would have been at least twice the amount but at 68 euros it was a bargain.
I shall most certainly visit again on my next time in Cyprus.
Well worth a visit if you like traditional foods and traditional settings at bargain prices.

Next to come the Coral Bay Hotel in Paphos where we spend Saturday and Sunday with the family, also to feature DASOUDI BEACH in Limassol amongst others.
