If the condition you describe is one from which you truly suffer, then professional help is quite obviously the only course most likely to be of benefit.

If you are of the opinion that 'Self Help' may be an alternative then, providing you are prepared to read up on the condition (for that IS precisely what the symptoms you describe would appear to be) there are numerous volumes available on the subject of such disorders on the net.

If the purpose of your post is a frivolous attempt to either attract sympathy or (more likely) derision, I would like to inform you that there are many thousands of genuine sufferers who are currently availing themselves of the first option (which is the obvious course of action) and that if you are NOT one of those genuine sufferers, then a good strong boot in the arse might bring you to your senses.

Hiya Figgy

I used to suffer from something similar (not as severe as you, though) in my late teens and early twenties. Whilst living at home, the sound of my dad's snoring in the other room was very calming and I could ignore them knowing my dad meant 100% security. When I left home for Uni, these sensations became unbearable and I eventually spoke to a GP who was completely useless and poo-poo-ed me. I outgrew them after a few years and it wasn't until a decade ago when I read about "Sleep Paralysis" that I realised they are a normal, although rare, occurrence in many young people, mostly women. Basically your brain is awake enough that you are conscious of thoughts, but your muscles are not under your control (the case when you are asleep) -- so you feel paralysed and the fears grow.

Knowing this may help -- I hope. Otherwise, they will pass in time. Don't start taking sleeping pills or other medications.

Here's something of what they feel like ...
