QUESTION ABOUT BECOMMING A CYPRIOT CITIZEN!!!

Postby Baklavaaa » Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:44 am

ok, i want to become a Cypriot citizen in the future and i had a few questions.

i am 17 years old currently living in the USA. i was born here. my father is Scotch Irish and my mother is Greek Cypriot, making me half Greek Cypriot and half Scotch Irish. both my parents and grandparents were born here. however, my great grandfather was born in Cyprus and immigrated to the USA. i have documentation proving he was a Cypriot citizen. could i be able to apply for citizenship due to my ethnic ties to the country, or does that not matter? this may not help, but i am Greek Orthodox and i speak Greek, although not fluently as i need practice.

Why do you want to became Cypriot citizen? If you are a USA citizen you can come and live in Cyprus if you want with no problems. Based on your family history you can not get the citizenship directly. You will have to come and live here for some years and then apply for citizenship. Maybe your background will help you get the citizenship a bit faster but it will still take at least 5 years.

ahh i see...and i dont know i just feel more natural if i can get it based on my ethnicity. i have family there so i feel like it should be easier for some reason. so it would be smarter just to move there all together and just live there and base my citizenship off of that?

Unfortunately, obtaining Cypriot citizenship is very hard.

There are literally thousands of Cypriots in the diaspora who are not entitled to it. If the family migrated before 1960, then you can kiss your citizenship rights good bye.

I wasn't allowed

The RoC really needs to look at this, as well as giving suffrage to overseas citizens.

The whole idea should be to try and get back some of the diaspora and alleviate the brain drain. The RoC needs to remove many obstacles, otherwise there will be no diaspora to talk about. Not ideal for a country with significant political problems!!!!
