QUESTION ABOUT BECOMMING A CYPRIOT CITIZEN!!!

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Another anomaly is the fact that males of Cypriot heritage may no be entitled to citizenship but STILL have a Military Obligation to the RoC. Now, those that wish to obtain RoC citizenship and/or live in the RoC will not have a great issue with this as they no doubt love their country to begin with, but it is very strange that someone can serve the CNG, be discharged and still not obtain citizenship unless they live in Cyprus for more than 5 years.

If there are any Cypriot politicians that are reading, then I plead that they attempt to address this very serious issue if possible.

My husband left Cyprus for the UK in 1952 and when he came to live permanently in 1994 he was told he would have to apply for Cypriot Citizenship, after which he would also be entitled to vote. The reason he lost his citizenship was because he was out of Cyprus between the years l955-59.

His application was completed in one month and mine took two months, which saved me from having to apply for a visa every year. On my last visit to the immigration, the man in charge said to me in Greek (to save you coming again there is a window) so I'm looking for the window and my husband laughed and told me the man was telling me: "there is another way to settle the matter" which meant as my husband was Greek Cypriot, I should apply for citizenship, so we both went through the procedure. By the time we'd put the special stamps on our forms, my husband told the clerk it looked like we'd be walking home to our village from Nicosia.

Anyway we both are eligible to vote and that's important for us.

Regards,

Annaka.

Paphiti, this is not true.

If the father was cypriot the citizenship is automatic. if the mother is a cypriot and his grand father, he can apply for citizenship.

His perid of stay in Cyprus is 6 months before he can apply as I was told.

Now having a scotish irish dad, may even get him out of national service.

The rules are so fucked up here, you have to be Einstein just to get through them. Even the idiots who wrote them don't understand them!!!!

Need i say, if he knew someone inside, the ride would be even smoother!

Well I don't know if things have changed recently B25!

All I know is that when I was 18, I applied and had to supply supporting documentation such as my fathers passport and Birth Certificate as proof that he was born in Cyprus. I got a reply from the Consulate in Canberra, stating that I was not entitled to Cypriot citizenship because my father was not a citizen but a mere British Subject of Cyprus since he left the island in the early 50s.

It didn't matter in the end as I would have been required to surrender the passport a short time after, but recently I reapplied by bypassing the Cyprus Consulate in Canberra and submitting the paperwork through a third entity and got the passport as well as a RoC ID card within 2-3 weeks. Not sure if this is because some laws were changed or amended.

Paphiti, you are quite correct you do have to prove your father was born in Cyprus. But i wouldn't take any notice from the overseas consulates / high commissions for they don't even know jack shit mate. they are just jobs for the boys and I have absolutely no faith in them. Better to deal direct.

Like I said, if you know someone you can get them super fast. personally you should have gone back to the consulate and asked them to explain themselves whilst holding your passport and ID in their faces.

Good luck to you all the same.

Sotos wrote:Why do you want to became Cypriot citizen? If you are a USA citizen you can come and live in Cyprus if you want with no problems. Based on your family history you can not get the citizenship directly. You will have to come and live here for some years and then apply for citizenship. Maybe your background will help you get the citizenship a bit faster but it will still take at least 5 years.

Ignore Sotos, Americanism doesn't get you anywhere!

If you use your Scottish/Irish nationality, you can stay here with no problems.
