Cypriot Driving License Questions

Postby alex_ruffneck » Sat Aug 28, 2010 2:45 pm

Right, i have a british driving license, but i've lost both the photocard and the paper counterpart, so i can't insure myself on a vehicle here until i either apply for a new one in the uk and then get it posted here, or just take a test here and get a cypriot license.
I'm wondering how long it would take to get a cypriot license, how much it would cost, how long i would need to wait to get a test booked (in uk there is often a long waiting list)

If i get a new uk license it may take up to 2 months, and i need to be able to drive asap.

Will i be better off getting a cypriot license?

Thanks in advance

Mine's been revoked because i failed to send it to get points put on it in time, so i can't apply online - i have to get a form sent to my house in the uk, then get it sent here, fill it in, and send it back to swansea! I'm still legally allowed to drive, i just can't fill in the online form

Just spoke to someone at a driving school who said if you have an exisiting uk driving license, you can't get a cypriot one... can anyone confirm this?

Yes, what you have been told is correct. The UK/foreign driving license has to be surrendered to the RoC Department of Road Transport if you decide that you wish to exchange it for a RoC driving license. Just to prove myself wrong I have known people with valid current driving licenses from both the RoC and the UK, all of them had been tested in the UK and none of them took an RoC driving test, how they managed to do this I have no idea but I'm fairly certain and I dont mind being corrected that it aint legal under either national or EU driving regulations.

For information about lost EU or National licenses check out the following,

www.cyprusdriving.net

Go to the menu on the left and click on Driving Documents then on 'Lost Driving Licenses' on the drop down menu, you may be able to get your missing UK license or its Cypriot equivelent replaced here in the RoC.

It says "If your current EU or National licence is lost or stolen, it has to be replaced in your country of current residence. The replacement will be based on the information or proof supplied from the issuing Country. (Article 8(5) of Directive 91/439/EEC)."

My country of residence is currently here, so i presume that means i can get one here, using info from dvla in uk. i'll look into it.

Thanks for your help rotate :)

It can be arranged that you pass the test in Cyprus!

My son did it without any lessons, I won't get in the car if he is driving!
