Sale by Greek Cypriots of their land in north

Postby annaka » Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:01 pm

My son's godfather passed away nearly two years ago and his daughter has contacted me about some land he owned in Ayios Vasilios. I know it is now called Karsiyaka and there is a lot of controversy going on there at present.

Before I reply to her query, can you give me some idea as to whether there is actually an agent in the UK and are there really Greek Cypriots selling. How do they manage that with the Land Registry having all the paperwork in the ROC and anyway, I thought it was something not to be encouraged.

This is her query:
I've heard rumours that greek cypriots who have land on the turkish side can now sell them apparently there is a contact over here in UK that deals with it, I don't know any more than that but just wondered whether you have heard anything? I will do my research but I know you keep up to date with these issues and you may know.

Please don't take this as Gospel, but some Greek Cypriots have tired to sell recently and came up against a brick wall.
It appears the Greek Cypriot side still has the final say.It would be wish to contact the Greek Cypriot land registry to find out,if the land in question can actually be sold. This will insure you have the recognised Title Deeds, which then can be provided as evidence to a prospective buyer. The Government needs it's cut of cash in these transactions. You also have to take into account, the fees of the Greek Cypriot solicitor.
Previously, some people have sold their land in the North and evaded costs,by sending the cash out from Northern Cyprus to the United Kingdom.
The Greek Cypriots, who have tried to sell recently, provided the Turkish Cypriot title deeds, which were not recognised by this side. It's still an uncomfortable area of agreement.
There are a few Lawyers and Barristers, who now deal in this matter and have offices in the Larnaca and Paralimni areas.

Thanks for the replies to my question. My understanding is that the daughter is interested in selling her father's land as for the present it is an unknown quantity. Several years ago her father asked me to get it up on Google Earth and at that time there were not many buildings to see. I had a look yesterday and the number of swimming pools in the area would suggest that there are many new dwellings since the first time we checked.

However, her father did make several trips to the north with his koumbaros, and I suggested that he may even know the actual location. As he is resident in London I left it up to them to see if there is anything to be done. When our koumbaros died, we did leave the kochani for this land with his daughter's lawyer in Larnaca, so have to leave it there.

Thanks for your response, regards,

Annaka.

My basic question on this is simple. If someone stole your car -can you still sell it to someone else? OK maybe you can tranfer the ownership in papers but what about the thieve- is he going to release the car to the buyer? May be the solution is you to transfer the money you are going to get from the buyer to the thieve, in which case you just selling your car at no money.

Legally and technically IMPOSSIBLE! Forget it!

Any such "transactions" that may have taken place between individuals are null & void. Don't be conned into anything.

No, it was a genuine question, but don't worry as I have replied to the lady in the UK and she will take it from there - job done.
