Beer & Zivania Politics in Cyprus?

Postby MoonageDaydream » Tue Aug 24, 2010 1:40 am

I was in a pub earlier and talking about Cyprus when one of the regulars said you could tell a Cyrpiot's politics by the beer they drink.
He said someone who drinks Carlsberg is more likely to vote DISY or DIKO, but someone drinking Keo will probably be AKEL or EDEK....

I thought it sounded highly dubious, but then he said it even applies to Zivania. According to him AKELites prefer the Loel brand.

Was it the beer talking (as I suspect) or is there any truth in his story?

So why is there a link between right wing politics and a beer from the usually Social Democratic Denmark? - Can't see the connection myself.

Presumably hard right Greek nationalists drink Mythos do they?
(I know its Efes in the north, but that's probably down to colonialism rather than taste!)

Also, cocktail drinking girls tend to be the least smart and easiest to pick up, as opposed to wine drinkers

The political beer thing is not as valid now as it was 30 odd years ago. My family all drink KEO and all are slightly to the right of Attila the Hun!
