For the time being there is no common defense for EU and each country has to arrange its own defense separately. Therefore EU is not in the position to give directives on this issue.

How exactly are those teenagers insulted by being told they have to serve in the army? Every Greek Cypriot male has to serve.

Great to see you are still not giving a shit about human rights

Are you saying that serving in the army is a violation of human rights?

I served in the army for 26 months and I do not see this as a violation of my human rights, but as a duty to my country to help protect it from those criminals like you who want to violate our human rights.

I am saying being forced to serve, is a violation of human rights.

You would, but that is only because you are a fucking racist nationalist scum, very likely to be an ex EOKA-B, if not, definitely a sympathizer.

It would take a mentality as low as yours, in order for anyone to be comfortable in a place like the army, also blind enough to think that you are actually doing something good.

Herd mentality, is what its also called, if you want to go get Freudian.

However there are exceptions.

There are also people who are smart enough to be aware of all this, yet still go through with it.

They are also known as Psychopaths. The ability to act normal while lacking morality and most importantly, empathy!

You would probably fit in the latter, but since I don't know you as a person I cant say for sure, you could just be an old moron too

You are also being forced to pay taxes and fulfill many other responsibilities toward your country. There are many things that while not convenient or enjoyable for the individual are good for the greater good of the country, which in return serves the interests of its citizens.

Cyprus is a country of half a million people and the invaders are a country which is 100 times bigger. Therefore we do not have the luxury to depend on a much smaller professional army.

I can see how you would prefer Cyprus to be totally undefended, so criminals like you would have an easier time committing your crimes against our island. We will not make you the favor mate.

Turkey violates the human rights of 100s of thousands of innocent Cypriots and then you come here to blame Cypriots because they want to defend themselves from the Turkish aggression and expansionism

I was making a perfectly valid point. It's just that you're to obtuse to see it.

Thanks for all the responses. The teenagers I wrote about are from Australia,United Kingdom,Canada and U.S.A. All born in these countries and many here for the first time. They are stopped at the Larnaca Airport and questioned in Greek,as they cannot understand, their Father's who speak a little Greek explain that, they are here for a holiday. The Airport person, states that, there should be some paper work attached to the passport,to allow the teenager to leave the Island.Otherwise,he has to serve as a recruit in the Army.
These teenagers never witnessed the 1974 problems. How would they associate with the locals and then be picked on,because they are 'Charlies',who can't speak Greek, and their Fathers' inturn are also referred to as 'Charlies'.
What credible purpose would these teenagers serve,if they still serve in the Army and wish to leave the Island? And perhaps never wish to return?
It appears a little out of context,a waste of money and resources.
Any sugestions?

You're talking shit. We're talking about third generation, to all intents and purposes foreign nationals, with perhaps one or more Cypriot-born grand-parents, being harrassed at the airport. At a time when Cyprus needs all the international friends it can get, any affinity such youngster feel towards the island should be cherished and nurtured. And only a peasant would fail to see that.

I agree, someone who has lived out of the island all his life, and just so happens to be of cypriot descent shouldn't really feel obliged to serve here, and he certainly shouldn't be "harassed" at the airport. But i feel i must mention i was in the same situation, and all through growing up, whilst visiting the island on holidays (often twice or more a year), flying to paphos and larnaca, i NEVER experienced this, which makes me think it's more of an isolated case than the norm.

I challenged the Cypriot High Commission here in the UK to define what was meant by 'Greek Cypriot' to see whether or not one would need an 'Αδια εξοδου' (exit visa) when visiting Cyprus. They still haven't been able to respond. It's bollocks.

Did you tell them you're a Charlie?
