Alki FC - where do they play?

Postby MoonageDaydream » Tue Aug 17, 2010 12:55 am

I'm hoping to go to the Alki vs AEK match in October, but where will it be played?

Wikipedia says Alki use Anorthosis's ground, yet when I saw Alki last year, they were using Nea Salamis's ground. Have they moved or has Wiji got it wrong again?

Thanks.
Looking forward to the Larnaca local derby.

Preumably AEK is the better supported team is it? Have Alki ever had their own ground?

not that i know off. Think they always played in GSZ. Due to them not being a refugee club they didn't get the funding to build their own like the famagusta teams did Anorthosis and Salamina.

Thanks DT

I see Alki were founded in 1948, presumably due to the same 'split' in the league that led to the formation of New Salamis and Omoneia?

Was the merger that created AEK popular with EPA and Pezo fans at the time or not? (I can't imagine clubs in Englinh cities like Liverpool, Sheffield, or Birmingham ever agreeing to merge!)

As I recall the city was split on this. POL (pezoporikos) has been formed again by those that disagreed with it and is starting now from the 4th division trying to climb back up as a new club. AEK is planning to sue for use of the old POL emblem.

Interesting to hear about thsee 'POL refusniks.'

What was the main motivation behind the AEK merger, was it financial pressure, or that the Larnaka clubs couldn't compete with the bigger teams in Limassol & Nicosia?

Mergers are relatively rare these days in English football, although Dagenham & Redbridge were the product of several mergers in their non-league days. Rushden & Diamonds were a merger of two clubs, but they are back in non-league again. In Scotland Inverness Caledonian Thistle were a merger of two rival clubs, but a third in that small city stayed out of the merger.
