I think Turkey will become an EU member eventually. It's been knocking on EU's door for decades and if the EU says no in December this will cost an awful lot to Turkey and to stability in the region. It has a youthful population and a large market which is something Europe needs, but I think that it will take some time because the legal reforms will have to be implemented and Turkey will have to prove that her democracy is not under threat before she joins.

I'm not 100% sure though because Turkey is a large country and it will have a lot of influence in European politics which is something some governments despise ( the French for example ) . I think a lot of pressure will be put on France and maybe Austria ( they don't favour Turkey's entrance ) because they all believe there's a real need for Turkey to be on their side.I think there are more reasons for Turkey's entrance than against it.

Yes Turkey will become an EU member. I dont have any doubt on that! After all these reforms that have been passed , I do not think EU have any other alternative as to accepet Turkey as a member.

In that case our region will become more peacfull and more prosperous!

A full EU member? I don't think this will happen in the next 15 years. After that nobody knows. The EU (or Turkey) might not even exist by then.

Not in the short run. Maybe after 20 years or so.

I agree with X-ite, and I would like to also add that USA is pushing hard in that direction. I think that Turkey's accession will do wonders for the stability of the region. If not, the army in Turkey will most certainly resume power, and this will also have detrimental effects on the Cyprob.

You have to bear in mind that not just Greece, but Spain and Portugal were allowed into EU not long after military rule had come to an end. You alos have to look at how countries that didn't even exist 15 years ago are now members of the EU. The EU acts as a basis of stability, if Turkey remains outside the EU the military establishment have more power.

TURKEY WILL BE A LIFETIME AFFILIATE COUNTRY!!

I don't understand why everybody is talking about Turkey either joining the EU or not.
There is always the mid way.

I think Turkey will NEVER become a full member of the EU. The main reason is because Turkey is such a big Country. If she joins she becomes the first political power due to its size. This cannot be because turkey does not have an equal economic power and most propably never will.So the big guys in the EU i.e Germany, UK, France etc will never accept such a situation.
On the other hand, Turkey being completely outside the EU would be catastrophic for both Turkey and the EU.

Turkey is very unstable and disoriented. She needs something more than the usual alliances of convenience. The number of Europe's problems, from inviding Turkey in , would be multiplied tenfold when they keep Turkey out. The Turkish economy will totally collapse. Trafficking of people and drugs to Europe through Turkey will flourish. War and terrorism will also be a way out, for them.

So the only solution out of this, is finally to give Turkey a date to start negotiations. These negotiations will last for ever, Turkey knows it EU knows it. It will be their little secret. But so what? Turkey will benefit the maximum possible from the EU, have no real problems in trading with EU etc. In the end I think Turkey will become a lifetime affiliate Country, with all the benefits this means. But to achieve even that she must become a true Democratic Country, proceed to reforms etc and OF COURSE SOLVE THE CYPRUS PROBLEM and her problems with Greece in the Aegean. The soonest possible, the better for her the better for everyone.

PS. As a Cypriot I think to be "an affiliate Country" is much better than be a full member in the EU. You have full control of your Country, chose only the EU regulations you like-most of them by the way are stupid regulations that just serve some monopolies-you pay nothing to the EU, you get nothing back also, and you are as European as you like. There is a little problem with Trading on equal basis but that goes away by the years.
