The cooling of relations with Israel and Turkeys refusal to support the USA on Iran issues has signalled the beginning of the end of the USA- Turkey alliance.
Unless the Cyprus problem is resolved and Turkey progresses towards EU membership the future for Turkey will develop in the M East and all that it entails....

Have you not just read what I wrote Milti?

Don't make me fetch the articles.

As opposed to what you think, this was never about the "civilized vs un-civilized", it's about money.

Shah , its about interests , money included , always has been and always will be.
If I was a Turkish General I would be be sending a few warning shots to the government right now , the USA and Israel's interests are intrinsically intertwined , Turkey has made a blunder that will reverberate to haunt her for years to come.
Israel has already put paid t its relations with Turkey and soon the USA will do the same . It is to Turkeys interests to push for a solution of the Cyprob as soon as possible , I feel.

That is why the US will not turn her back against Turkey, regardless of what Israel feels. Israel needs Turkey more than Turkey needs Israel.

For an indigenous Cypriot, you're one hell of a Turkish cheerleader.

The US has been needing Turkey and the Arabs for decades, but the Israelis and the jewish lobby figure it otherwise and otherwise it is. Every single president postwar has "felt the need" to declare in his first days in office how committed he is to the security of Israel. In the case of Obama it was in his first speech if memory serves.

What I see is TV news footage, on American TV outlets, is Israelis pounding the crap out of Palestinians, and then a US official coming on and defending "the right of Israel to self defence". The USA will never abandon Israel, or to put it another way, first it will let go of the states of California and New York before it thinks of deserting Israel.

Jewish culture is part and parcel of American culture, a development that no other community of immigrants has managed to equal even if they had the numbers and contribution to US progress. In other words Israel IS America.

Is that why the crowds cheered for his "concentrate on home issues" speech?

Jews are not the only fruit in the US Nikitas and the pressure to stop meddling is growing...

Turkey plays down US rift

By David O’Byrne in Istanbul

Published: August 16 2010 19:04 | Last updated: August 16 2010 21:44

Turkey sought to downplay tensions with Washington on Monday following a warning by President Barack Obama that Ankara’s stance on Iran and Israel jeopardised Congressional approval of arms purchases from the US.

A senior official from the Turkish foreign ministry said on Monday that Ankara did not plan any major change in policy. “This isn’t new, we’ve been hearing the same thing from US officials at every level,” he said. “They tell us that they understand our position, and that we have to understand their position and help them, if they are to get Congress to approve the sales.”

In June Turkey voted against US-championed sanctions on Tehran at the United Nations Security Council, following a deal Turkey and Brazil brokered with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Mr Obama told Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, of his concerns in June. “The president has said to Erdogan that some of the actions that Turkey has taken have caused questions to be raised on the Hill [Congress] … about whether we can have confidence in Turkey as an ally,” a senior administration official told the FT. “That means that some of the requests Turkey has made of us, for example in providing some of the weaponry that it would like to fight the [separatist] PKK, will be harder for us to move through Congress.”

Some US officials say that since the June meeting Ankara has been more responsive, but that Turkey’s image in Congress still requires attention.

The Turkish official said that further developments in negotiations with Iran were unlikely until Ramadan finished on September 12. “After that we are hoping to bring [Lady] Ashton together with Saeed Jalili [speaker of the Iranian parliament and former Iranian negotiator with the IAEA], ahead of the UN general Assembly on September 21.”

The US also wants Ankara to tone down its rhetoric following an Israeli raid on an aid flotilla to Gaza earlier this year, in which nine Turks were killed. The Turkish official said Turkey was awaiting the outcome of the newly established UN panel charged with investigating the incident, and that Turkey was hopeful of a positive outcome.

“It’s not exactly what we wanted but it’s the best we could get. It’s very positive that Israel accepted the panel – it offers Israel a way out of the current situation, we are hopeful that they will use it,” the official added.

Ankara is hoping to buy American drone aircraft, such as the missile-bearing Reaper. It is increasingly using unmanned aircraft to attack the PKK – which operates out of bases in northern Iraq – and fears that the planned US pull-out from Iraq in 2011 will mean increased PKK activity.

Turkey earlier this month took delivery of six Israeli Heron drones, ordered before the flotilla raid, which Israeli military personnel are training their Turkish counterparts to use. Turkish company TAI last month unveiled its own Anka drone at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK.
