WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton convened a special meeting of State Department and National Security Council officials to discuss the United States' relations with Turkey in the backdrop of the Ankara-Jerusalem crisis and following Turkey's decision to vote against tougher sanctions on Iran in the Security Council.

Turkey - outside the tent, pissing in.

Quite a few other countries export arms too, not all of who may be upset with Turkey reducing its reliance on USA and some of them would welcome the money. Take your pick from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arms_industry

It is not the outright purchase of arms which is at stake, but the transfer of manufacturing technology. Turkey has ambitions to build a factory making the next generation F35 fighter in Turkey. It also wants to build submarines and the new generation surface ships with stealth technology. This is what is at stake, not the purchase of a few planes.

No one will want to transfer this kind of technology to a nation that might then pass it on to "undesirables".

This is why we want Turkey "on the inside of the tent, pissing out."

Funny that, there seems to be news floating about totally dismissing Financial Times claims about the US giving Turkey ultimatums and such, which are coming from the White House...

Turkey needs America far more than America needs Turkey .
The cooling of relations with Israel and Turkeys refusal to support the USA on Iran issues has signalled the beginning of the end of the USA- Turkey alliance.
Unless the Cyprus problem is resolved and Turkey progresses towards EU membership the future for Turkey will develop in the M East and all that it entails....

Have you not just read what I wrote Milti?

Don't make me fetch the articles.

As opposed to what you think, this was never about the "civilized vs un-civilized", it's about money.

Shah , its about interests , money included , always has been and always will be.
If I was a Turkish General I would be be sending a few warning shots to the government right now , the USA and Israel's interests are intrinsically intertwined , Turkey has made a blunder that will reverberate to haunt her for years to come.
Israel has already put paid t its relations with Turkey and soon the USA will do the same . It is to Turkeys interests to push for a solution of the Cyprob as soon as possible , I feel.
