Partition was the policy, former TC Prime Minister

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Partition was the policy, former TC Prime Minister

Postby Nikitas » Thu Aug 12, 2010 5:02 pm

Former "Prime Minister" of TRNC Hakki Atoun, speaking in a TV interview said:

"after the invasion the destruction of GC property went to extremes simpy because it was GC property. When I saw the condition of a brickworks in Mia Milia I felt awful, "this goes beyond anything I have ever seen before" I thought."

Speaking about the settlers he said that the initial importation of 30 000 in 1975 was the result of an agreement signed with Turkey. "It was a mistake that TCs who came from the south were not given priority in the share of properties" Atoun said.

Yeni Duzen journalist Sami Ozouslou commenting on Atoun's statements said:

"one more time we realise that these things were not done haphazardly. The importation of 30 000 peope after the war, the change in locality names, the quick handing out of GC properties, the accelaration of population transfers from Turkey after 1986, the naturalisation policy and other such measures were all part of one policy. The policy of partition."

There you have it, from Denktash's right hand man and a respected TC journalist. So what exactly are we negotiating in these damn talks?

When are we going to honest with ourselves and admit that BBF is the pretty face of partition?

Is it possible to create a partnership with people who accept the above and will not do a thing to change any of it?

The above also prove liars all the people that contend that "embargoes" are the root cause of partition. The process started right after the invasion, they did not wait for any embargoes to start changing the face of the north and apply their version of ENOSIS.

What they done with the 'spoils of war' was terrible.

In the last paragraph you mention the embargoes. Just for the record the embargoes began after the events of 1963. NOT 1974.

As long as the policy of GC administration was Enosis and/or degrading TCs into minority status in a Hellenes ruled Cyprus; i see nothing wrong of TC administration pursueing the Taksim policy...

Atun claims that "TCs weren't given the priority in the share of properties." How comes? 50.000 TC refugees from South + 30.000 settlers sum up 80.000... so, to whom they gave the properties of 150.000 GC refugees? Ahh, ok! 50.000 GC refugges were from Maraş... and let's say 10.000 from the buffer zone... and there were some 20-25 thousand TC refugees from 193-64... almost totals to 145-150 thousands...

However, i myself witnessed that the settlers were given the worst houses; mostly damaged and made of adobe bricks...

Moreover, has Atun just realised supposedly what was happening?

I who was a 7 y.o in 1974 am able to make a better analyze of what was going on than this nitwit, so-called, ex- TC minister...

Really Insan!!!

How on earth can you argue with that which N has posted... how can you possibly argue with this chap, who was (i believe) the second most important politician in the Occupied Areas, here confessing to how a major part of the Taksim dream was put in to effect.

Insan says, "However, i myself witnessed that the settlers were given the worst houses; mostly damaged and made of adobe bricks... ".

That may be true Insan. The reason for this was that the good houses given to these people from the Easternmost Turkey, had never ever lived in such luxury before. They became targets for ridicule by the TCs. The reasons, were they never used tables or chairs before. The chairs (if made of wood) were used as firewood, The tables legs were cut down to 6 ", because they eat sitting on the floor. Door frames and window frames were also used as firewood. The authorities had no option if they did indeed give them the 'worst' houses available.
Anyway, we know who got all the best ones dont we.

Have you got the rest of the interview Nikitas?

We have held onto our lives and our liberty for 36 years now Nikitas and did what we had to do given the difficult situation as did the settlers......If faced with a sword you obtain a shield and if faced with ENOSIS you apply partition. The intervention was in 1974 and the first settlers in 1975.....Maybe an indication that things were not going well with the "RoC" :?: :?:  You show constant amasement at the fact that we want partition when faced with ENOSIS......Maybe a reality check would cure your nervous disposition :?

Bill, I said that; "As long as the policy of GC administration was Enosis and/or degrading TCs into minority status in a Hellenes ruled Cyprus; i see nothing wrong of TC administration pursueing the Taksim policy..."

As a GC; most probably you don't agree with me because you, as most of the GCs think that TCs are a minority in Cyprus... but for most of the TCs the situation is how i stated above...

However, this does not mean the destruction of GC property... why should the destruction of GC property be the official policy of TC administration while there were about 70.000 TC refugees? Maybe some groups of TCs for various reasons; eg, rancour of the past, losing their loved ones, mental illness under the circumstances etc., completely or partly destroyed a few dozens of GC properties but this cannot be considered a part of official TC administration policy for partition...

Yes, partition policy has always the B-Plan of TC administration because GC administration has never given just a small sign of accepting TCs as a politically equal state partner...

Under such circumstances, if i was the TC leader; I too would pursue the Taksim policy on one hand and on the other hand under obligation follow the policy shaped by the alliance(NATO) which indirectly i had responsibilities for it...

As for the property ownership, restitution and/or exchange and/or compensation;you know what else would I've done had i been then the TC leader...

I many times reiterated that TC leadership made many mistakes both pre-74 and afterwards; against GCs and against TCs... but pursueing Taksim policy while GC adminsitration has been pursueing Enosis and/or degrading TC community into minority status was not one of the mistakes of TC administration...

It is true that most of the Turkish villagers, including Thracians were not familiar with the chairs and tables though in Cyprus i've never come across any of them using wooden chairs and tables as firewood but when thinking logically it might have happened...

It is also true that they became target for ridicule by the TCs but that could be considered natural because the attitude of most of the townsman against villagers is in it's essential; almost had/have no difference...

Yeah, we know who got all the best ones and more than what they deserved...

Hakki Atun looting of occupied Greek Cypriot properties reached extremes
Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (11.08.10) reports that Hakki Atun, who has served as prime minister, MP, minister, party leader and bureaucrat in the occupied part of Cyprus since 1975, has made very striking statements in an interview with journalist Sami Ozuslu on Kanal Sim television.

Referring to the looting of the occupied Greek Cypriot properties after the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Atun said that looting reached extremes and added: Because they were Greek Cypriot properties, they were demolished and ruined. When I saw the situation of a brick factory at Haspolat [Tr. Note: occupied Mia Milia village] I felt very sorry. That beats everything, I said.

Referring to the issue of the illegal Turkish settlers brought to the island after the 1974 invasion, Atun said that 30,000 persons were brought as labour force in the field of agriculture, within the framework of a protocol signed between the then Turkish Prime Minister Ecevit and Ismet Kotak on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots. Atun claimed that their aim was to give land to these settlers and encourage production. He said it was wrong that the Turkish Cypriots, who moved from the southern to the northern part of the island, were not given priority in the distribution of the occupied Greek Cypriot properties.

Atun expressed the view that the reply given by prime minister Kucuk when Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan asked him recently about his salary was not the reply which should have been given. He recalled that when former Turkish Prime Minister Ciller told him and Ozker Ozgur that I can give you as much as I give to Konya, he replied that Konya had been rescued long ago, but Cyprus had not been rescued yet.

Atun referred to a conversation he had with an employee of a hotel in the occupied part of Cyprus who told him that Turkish Cypriots do not work under these conditions. He added that persons for whom he mediated to be employed in another hotel were able to endure only three days there.

Commenting on Atuns statements, Sami Ozuslu writes in his column in Yeni Duzen that from Atuns words regarding events in the period after 1974 we realize once more that these did not happen accidentally.

Ozuslu adds the following: The fact that 30,000 persons were brought from Turkey to Cyprus after the war as labour force in agriculture, the change of the names of the villages, the quick distribution of the Greek Cypriot properties, the speeding up of the inflow of population after 1986, the citizenship policy and other steps were all products of an explicit policy. The policy of partition!

Ozuslu says that those who supported the partition or death slogan have never believed in a solution based on partnership in Cyprus. Therefore, they have never accepted the Cypriot or even the Turkish Cypriot identity and implemented the policy of one Turk goes another Turk comes, he notes adding that Rauf Denktash led the partition mentality.

Ozuslu points out that if a person such as Hakki Atun, one of the top names of the right wing, feels the need to ask how many Cypriots work in a hotel, it means that nothing else remains to be said.
