From other side of the Coin

VAKIFLAR URGES FOR AN END TO CULTURAL DEMOLITION IN SOUTH CYPRUS

The Cyprus Vakıflar Administration has launched an initiative on the demolition of mosques located in South Cyprus. The Administration has sent letters to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the Presidents of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, the European Union Commission and Parliament, through the TRNC Foreign Ministry.

The Vakıflar Administration earlier determined that mausoleums inside the gardens of some mosques located in Limassol were destroyed.

In the letter, Vakıflar calls on the sides to do what is necessary and urges the Greek Cypriot Side to give up on its unrespectful approach towards history and the Muslim community.

The letter says it is the Greek Cypriot Side’s impropriety to follow such a stance while it positions itself as the champion of cultural heritage.

Separately, the Director of the Vakıflar Administration Mustafa Kemal Kaymakamzade has brought complaint to the US Ambassador to South Cyprus Frank Urbancic on the same case.

Kaymakamzade stressed that properties owned by Vakıflar cannot be sold or transferred.

Didn't Denktash and Küçük sell most, if not all of Vakif land to the British for £1.5 million pounds back in 1960.??

The British even have the "Bill of Sale" for it if I'm not mistaken.!

They sold the most of Vakif land? You are very irrational as usual Kikapu... Vakif land is spread all around of whole Cyprus not only around of 2 British bases which they sold to the Brits...

The statement also says that Vakif land cannot be sold or transferred. How did Denktash and Küçük got around this problem and what happened to the £1.5 million pounds.??

Kiks, the Vakif land was not sold, the British re-distributed it to its rightful owners the GC and in return gave Denktash and kucuk £1.5m for community spending, but denktash and his buddy pocketed the money.

You were on the right lines but your TC compatriots won't accept anything you say as they know you speak the truth and it hurts them.

Now, if I may use a line from the movie "The Rock",

Usurpation of Vakif land by Brits and GCs is completely another issue happened previously... The 1.5 m deal was a secret cooperation between Brits and TCs with the implicit approval of 3rd parties; under some special circumstances...

EROGLU’S PUBLIC ADDRESS ON NEGOTIATIONS :!:

“If both sides show the necessary political will and leadership, then it might be possible to resolve the Cyprus problem by the end of this year” TRNC President Derviş Eroğlu has said. In his public address on the course of Cyprus peace negotiations issued today, which was broadbast on Bayrak Radio and Television, the President underlined the need for following a mutual constructive approach towards achieveing a fair solution in Cyprus.''

“As earlier stressed by the United Nations, the end of this year is a turning point on the Cyprus issue. That is to say, there is a “natural” timetable for a settlement, although the Greek Cypriot Side rejects time restrictions''

He also emphasized that a possible settlement must take the two constituent states of equal status as its basis.

Providing information about the Property Chapter, which is the current chapter of talks, Eroğlu said that any progress to be achieved on this thorny issue will bring momentum to the solution process.

Yet, the President said there has not been a significant level of progress on Property.

“Our primary principle on Property is the bi-zonality- which has become a UN parameter” Eroğlu said, adding that bringing restrictions to the return of properties is a must in order not to destroy the main principle that each community will rule one constituent state.

Eroğlu noted that leaving the final decision on Property to the individuals can bring chaos.

He reminded of the fact that the recent rulings of the European Court of Human Rights on related cases have seriously strengthened the TC proposals on Property.

Derviş Eroğlu said he believes that it will be possible to come up with more concrete proposals on this Chapter in September as the two sides already discussed their mutual expectations and concerns before giving a break to the talks.

He also reiterated the Tuekish Cypriot Side’s full cooperation with motherland Turkey while resuming the negotiations process.

On the issuse of the Direct Trade Regulation- which was introduced by the EU Commission in 2004 and remained unimplemented-, President Eroğlu said the implementation of the Regulation will not mean the removal of isolations on the TRNC, but will be a step forward.

“Such initiatives will also encourage the Greek Cypriot Side to follow a more conceivable stance in the process of settlement” he added.

Eroğlu went on saying that establishing a bi-zonal, bi-communal partnership is hard, but not impossible.

The President finalized his public address by stating that he will no way allow the people of the TRNC to re-experience the pre-1974 period and promised on the protection of gained rights.
