Offensive terms - split from GC ultra nat thread

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Piratis » Wed Aug 03, 2005 12:34 am

Erolz, it is not just a matter of words. E.g. If Cyprus was united with Greece, and it was a Greek district but instead of "Greek district of Cyprus" was given the name "independent Cyprus", would this mean that enosis would be ok with you?

The extreme position is not the name. The extreme position is that you believe that part of Cyprus is Turkish (or TC) and this is the same either you put it in the name or not.

Are you saying that no part of cyprus is TC?

this whole discussion started with you saying

Basically they believe that a part of Cyprus is Turkish! Isn't this equally as offensive? Have we maybe got used to this offense that it doesn't bother us anymore?

I do not believe that saying part of cyprus is Turkish CYPRIOT is the same and equally offesnive as saying 'Cyprus is Greek'

I can accept that if you chose to see it that way that references to TRNC can be interpreted as saying part of cyprus is Turkish and can futher accept that this is equaly offensive to saying (all of) Cyprus is Greek. Thus I have offered to use the term RNC and not TRNC so their can be no confusion as to if I am trying to be as offensive to GC as GC are offesnive to TC by saying 'Cyprus is Greek'.

uh oh mr. moderator. looks like i went off topic on that one. maybe i should be banned?

There is no need to get 'over dramatic' now. No one has ever been banned for being off topic. Their posts may or may not be split out from the original thread and thats it.

Also I can seperate my actions / posts as a moderator and as a member. Could you not at least try and do the same perhaps?

i think if you really cared about not offending people then you wouldnt persist on calling my mothers ancestral home a land where turkish settlers are currently occupying (whether it be TRNC or RNC)

and since you obviously could care less i dont see why you shoul dbe bothered with coming up with new terms.

adios.

Now I am just plain confused???

Despite what you may think I do care about not offending people unecessarily in my use of words. If you can tell me that what use of words will still allow me to identify the entites that exist without causing offence I will consider using them?

If you are saying that the very existance of the RNC is an offense to you then I can understand that in general terms (though it's hardly my personal fault - but that of my community/T) but not understand what relevance it has to discussions of how relatively offensive the use of terms like 'Cyprus is Greek' are vs 'Part of Cyprus is TC' ???

i prefer north cyprus. or just plain TCs. i dont think there is anything wrong with those terms.

also lets not forget only one member has posted Cyprus is Greek.
whereas
Many members remind us of TRNC.

thats what it comes down. i know your stance on the issue and accept it. im just reiterating what another member stated.

Are you saying that no part of cyprus is TC?

Exactly. Why is part of Cyprus TC???

TCs are part of Cyprus, thats different. Because if you say that part of Cyprus is TC, then why that same part is not GC?

The whole Cyprus is Cypriot, and TCs and GCs are part of Cyprus.

This is the non nationalistic point of view. Of course you can believe whatever else you want, but in that case you can not accuse people like "KYPROS ... ".

So if I use ANC (adminstration of north cyprus) to refer to our leaders and just TC or TC community to the people you will be less offended? If so I will happily try and do so. What about TCCS? Is that offensive to you?

As I understand it it was their username in greek rather than something they posted? Is their a KKTC user or TRNC user here?

magikthrill wrote:Many members remind us of TRNC.

And I can assure you absolutely that when I have used the term TRNC in the past it has been merely as a label and with no intention of causing offense to GC by saying 'part of cyprus is turkish' and one that I am happy to change if it's offensive or potentialy offensive.

I am still a bit confused in al honesty that you see such usage of the term TRNC as a label in posts as the same as a user name of 'Cyprus is Greek' in terms of it's intent to cause offence to the other community? But if you do feel that way it's easily dealt with. Friom now on and as far as I can remember to do so I will use the terms ANC and TC / TC community (and whatever you think is a non offensive label for TCCS) for I can assure you that I wish to neither casue needless offence or to make trivial matters a big issue when we have so many real big issue to try and resolve.

In 1960 was part of Cyprus TC? The part owned and lived in by TC for generaltions? If you find the idea that part of Cyprus is TC offensive then there is little hope of there ever being a future cyprus you do not find offensive as long as there are TC in Cyprus

Piratis wrote:TCs are part of Cyprus, thats different. Because if you say that part of Cyprus is TC, then why that same part is not GC?

TC are part of Cyprus. Part of Cyprus is TC. Don't really see the difference myself? If I say that a part of Cyprus in the south that was owned by a TC pre 74 and that you claim you and your government claim you still respect the ownership of is TC - will you also ask is this part not also GC?

Piratis wrote:The whole Cyprus is Cypriot, and TCs and GCs are part of Cyprus.

The whole of the apple is an apple. The core and the flesh are part of the apple. The apple is part flesh. The apple is part core. (now try that replacing apple with cyprus, core with TC and flesh with GC).

and now we desend into the 'twilight zone'. I can not accuse the poster refered to as having an intent to cause offence to TC with the choice of his user name because I say that Cyprus is made up of TC and GC and therefore part of Cyprus is TC and part of it is GC ?????
