Can someone tell me when/if Cyprus started issuing a redesigned passport to reflect joining the EU? Ie. with 'EUROPEAN UNION' written on it?
The reason why I ask is that I am amused/annoyed every time I travel to a more 'far away' country who has no idea whatsoever where/what Cyprus is. Some border guards don't even believe that it exists and have to look it up. Sometimes this is closer to our doorstep than we'd usually believe - an Estonian immigration guy made me wait for 30 minutes while he checked where Cyprus was and if I was allowed in without a visa. It's nice in one way but irritating in another.
I think having 'EUROPEAN UNION' written on the front would help and I'd probably renew my passport if the government has finally done this. I got my passport in '06 and assumed it would be standardised as per the rest of the EU member states. Nope. Anyone got a scan of one of the new Cypriot passports? I'm keen to see how it looks.
