A woman in the eastern province of Van was beaten allegedly by her husband after a court decided she could return home from the women’s shelter where she was staying, news agencies reported Monday.
Sıdıka Pilatin, 29, was found unconscious Friday in her home by neighbors with her body bearing indications that she had been beaten. She was taken to the hospital, but the whereabouts of her husband remain unknown.
Last year Faruk Pilatin, Sıdıka’s husband, beat her and cut her face and ear with a knife. The husband was placed under a restraining order for six months and Sıdıka was taken to a women’s shelter, Doğan news agency reported. However, the local family court in Van removed the restraining order allowing Faruk to collect his wife from the shelter after hearing him testify that he would never repeat his actions. The court’s decision was criticized by women’s organizations.
What if he comes back?
Members of women’s associations in Van are standing guard in front of the hospital where Sıdıka was admitted. “
Unfortunately Sıdıka was not protected by the state. And now there is no protection in the hospital. Her husband might come back and finish the job. We are on watch here to protect her. And we will not leave until she gets out of hospital,” said Hemide Yeni, head of the Van Saray Women’s Association, in a press statement.
“The husband should be in jail,” said Zozan Özgökçe, head of Van Women’s Association, talking to private news channel NTV. There should be social programs for the rehabilitation of women like Sıdıka Pilatin and for all family members, she said. “There are officials working in the region who have not accepted the equality of men and women.”
