Marriage question

Postby Crivens » Fri Jul 30, 2010 11:33 am

I'm getting married in Cyprus at the end of september and was told I needed to sort out some paperwork here. This included a letter to the Irish embassy for my fiance (who is Irish) which has resulted in a letter from them saying she can get married. No worries then.

So I also sent off a load of documentation (inc. newspaper cutting saying we were getting married, various notified documents etc) to certificates of no impediment, at the foreign and commonwealth office in London. However, they have now come back to me (a month later) with all my documents and a letter saying that unfortuantly they cannot issue certificates of no impediment for marriages in a commonwealth country, of which Cyprus is a member, and that I will need to speak to the authorities conducting my marriage ceremony to make them aware of this and ask what alternatives should be provided.

Obviously this is a bit worrying when I received it this morning, so does anyone know what I need to do? I'm just about to email the municipality that is dealing with our marriage, but wanted to get an idea here as well incase I misunderstand a more legal (and therefore highly confusing) email.

Massively appreciate any help anyone can give on this!

Cheers

Assuming you are British, why don't you just get married proper in a registrars office in UK and then just have a "ceremony" in Cyprus?

Really? So I don't need some bit of paper declaring I can legally get married and I haven't been married before? My fiance needed to get one from the Irish embassy, and documents my future mother in law found online (UK government website) indicated I needed all this stuff before getting a Certificate of no impediment. Slightly annoying if don't need any of it after the hassle it caused (newspaper article, notarised documents etc etc).

All my family are in Cyprus, as was I until 2008, and it doesn't feel right without my parents being there.

Thanks guys, I'm feeling a little better now. Was a bit panicky there for a second! Perhaps down the pub for my day off. It might not be hot here, but at least the beers warm... no wait...

Cheers

Women marry men thinking they'll change - but they don't.
