Finally the dictator who started it all spoke. Ioannides gave his first ever interview to journalist Frangos. The information is, for me anyway, very interesting.
On July 20, after the invasion started, Ioannides met at the Greek armed forces HQ with the following people, the list is fascinating:
President of Greece, Gizikis
Prime Minister Andritsopoulos
Foreign Minister Kypraios
Defence Minister Latsoudis
Chiefs of the Army, Navy and Airforce
US UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE SISCO
US AMBASSADOR HENRY TASKA
"Sisco told us to show self restraint. He ssured us that he (Sisco) and Kissinger would convince the Turks to leave the island in the next few days, leaving behind a force of 1500 men to reinforce the Turkish Cyprus Contingent and to boost the morale of the TCs. For the above reasons he asked us to avoid any military operations" says Ioannides.
It is amazing that a time of a historic national crisis the Greek dictator and his chief advisers and collaborators would be holding a JOINT council with American officials.
What is even more astounding is that while the Greeks, through their coupist oficers who were by now in full control of the island, did not have direct intelligence about the situation developing on the ground. A simple count of the landed troops and the scale of the invasion would have been enough to make them understand that the Americans were selling them a crock.
Fascinating stuff and interesting insights into the workings of the military mind. What happened to the old adage that you engage the enemy wherever he appears and all that crap.
