Half Cypriots?

Postby Omer Seyhan » Thu Jul 22, 2010 11:19 pm

Just wondering if there are any half Cypriots here and if so, how do they identity themselves, what are their feelings about Cypriotness?

Half Cypriot, 1/4 Dodecanesios, 1/4 Kastorianos. Consider myself Cypriot plus. Born smack in the center of old Nicosia in Trypiotis.

Like Nikitas, I am a fully fledged, true blue, native Cypriot because my parents and grandparents hail from across the expanse of the Hellenic world ... 8)

From Epirus, to Thebes, to Paphos ... and one of the last born deep in the heart of my ancient mountain village [in a stable, amidst British bombings].

Kastorianos is a person hailing from Kastoria, a town famous for its fur trade, in Macedonia, the real one not the ersatz version.

I really don't have an idea about what percent of my blood is Cypriot mate... What if my first grand mom in Cyprus was a Maronite settler from Syria who became widow and got married to my great grand dad right after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus? :?

Do i have any idea about whether my ancestors emigrated to Anatolia from Cyprus and then reemigrated back to Cyprus in BC? :?

However, if you ask how much culturally I'm a Cypriot; I can speak with pure TC dialect, prefer to eat all of our traditional dishes instead of fast food, lead a life like an old fashioned TC...

... but i feel like... the world is my oyster... 8)

Now you calcualte/evaluate how much what, is I am....

My children both of which are 1/2 Cypriots are totally different in their outlook , my daughter although half English feels naturally more Cypriot since she is living in Cyprus , married to a Cypriot and has learned the Greek language, my son however who lives in England married to an English girl , he does not speak Greek and naturally he feels more than 50% English.
One of the reasons that he does not feel the same way as his sister is the fact that whilst growing up in London most of the first cousins were like him ie a Cypriot father and an an English mother, but I believe that for a half Cypriot to feel more of a Cypriot he or she must have regular contact with the Cypriot culture and I believe those whose mothers rather than fathers are G/C tend to lean more towards the mothers side ie Cypriot , from the mother they also learn the mother tongue . My grandchildren are 3/4 Cypriot and 1/4 English , the eldest girl almost seven speaks fluent English having taken the mothers tongue as it were and of course she speaks Greek.
As for the almost 2 and half year old boy he speaks a mixture of both !!

My late wife although born and raised in England with English parents grandparents and beyond ,embraced Cypriotness totally and proudly told everyone that she was a Cypriot , she did not speak more than a few words of Greek but she adored Cyprus having fallen in love with the island on our first visit here in 1966 , she chose Cyprus as her final resting place....

Nikitas,
I too am 25% Kastorianos, 75% Brit., born and spent my early youth very close to Tripiotis - Trikoupi Str.
My Mum's parents were in fact in the fur trade.

Waldorf, have you been to Kastoria to trace your roots etc? I have not managed to get there yet, but I have gone to my grandfather's birthplace in Dodecanisa. I feel more of an islander than a mainlander.

My maternal grandfather must be the only Kastorianos who was not a furrier. He was a cotton merchant.

Our first house in Nicosia was in Xanthis Xenierou street near the city walls, close to the municipality building. Late rwe moved to Alexandrou street near Lokmaci. Talking about near and far inside old Nicosia is funny, a matter of scale I guess.
