Maybe the answer to your question is given by the Turkish government's original and continuing justification for the intervention, namely protection of Turkish Cypriots. Thus once the RoT military had secured (in their view) the protection of TCs, there was no need to occupy any more Cypriot territory. Job done.

Just because this is a simple, straightforward explanation doesn't mean that it isn't true.

But 70,000 TCs were still outside this "secured" territory, and for a long time afterwards. Why were these 70,000 TCs still safe amongst GCs even after Turkey gave the GCs reason for a 'massacre' by the Invasion?

So, how did acquisition of land first, then negotiating the safe passage of TCs (through GCs) into their new, and very large enclave, achieve the rational post-event seal of approval by you as a "straightforward" excuse for 'only' securing 40% of Cyprus?

Excellent point Oracle. Those of us who remember the 1974 events can verify that while the Turkish army was cleansing the north of GCs, the TCs were in fac tliving safely in the south. It took weeks for the British to collude with the Turks and accept the TCs in the base areas as refugees, where ironically order was kept by a mostly GC Base Area police. Then they bussed them to the north.

They could never make such a move the worlds attention was on Cyprus.

We must not forget the Double Union deal struck between dictator Papadopouls and Turkey in 1968, the so called Evros Agreement.

The problem was that the intervening strife among Greeks and GCs gave Turkey a chance to double cross the fascists and take more than was agreed.

The Double Union deal is the reason that none of the countries involved have opened their foreign office and other files regarding this period. So none of us can prove directly that there was a double union deal but there is plenty of circumstantial evidence to prove that it was made and acted on.

Makarios survival and return to the island nixed the Double Union and so we fell back on the "next best thing" for Turkey, which is BBF with one vital for the Turks component- dissolution of the RoC. And that is NOT going to happen. The RoC is the survival plank for GCs, and no one gives that up.

When we hear the insistent calls for dissolution of the RoC and the abolition of GC sovereignty, we have to ask why it is SO IMPORTANT for Turkey for that to happen. President Gul himself has stressed how the Annan plan would be such a good thing because it would delete GC sovereignty. He neve explained why.
