I never usually deviate from chosen locations for a relaxing few hours by the sea, I did this time and skipped Kourion beach , Chris's Blue Beach , in favour of Ladies Mile . I hadn't been there for a good 20 years if not more and I was rather looking forward to dipping my feet in the waters.
The restaurant we chose was , just like the beach , packed to the bream , managed to find a table however gathered some chairs and sat down anticipating a beer or two to quench my thirst. All the family were there and I was having a good time , that is for the first 15 minutes of waiting for someone to take our order . Nobody came for 15 minutes and I begun to lose my cool , I know they were very busy but all waiting staff seemed to be running around doing mostly nothing , all appeared foreigners. Eventually I managed to get the attention of a young Chinese looking waiter and begun to give our drinks order . Easy enough to ask for a couple of beers and seven ups but when asked for the wine list a complete blank expression told me that his knowledge of either Greek or English was very limited.
I did eventually manage to convey the message by which time I had begun to show signs of exasperation , and to top it all up a party of over 60s , two G/C couples , were puffing away right next to me while playing Pilotta. I gestured with a swift stroke of my palm that I was brushing their dirty smoke away from me , a lady noticed and murmured something to the other 3 who looked me up and down in a rather unfriendly fashion , I stared back and they got on with their filthy dirty habit while playing cards.
Our drinks arrived along with a bottle of white wine that I had not ordered , I wanted to see the wine list but the Chinese waiter ...misunderstood me . We eventualy ordered our meals and to my utter surprise they arrived within minutes. Not impressed and kept telling my self I should not have been persuaded to skip Kourion.
The area needs much development not least the road leading to it. My son in law told me that since the area is British sovereign the RoC CAN NOT
make improvements. Well I have always supported the British bases remaining in Cyprus if their continuation is beneficial to Cyprus and if Britain was supportive towards the RoC. THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE CASE , IS IT PERHAPS TIME TO SHOW BRITAIN WHO OWNS THE ISLAND AND STUFF THE NOW DEFUNCT ZURICH AGREEMENTS.
It takes guts and vision , the right man has not as yet emerged.
