Dark day remembered

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

And that Sampson! What a shifty looking bastard he was! Scarier than the bloke in the long black frock, tall hat and grey beard

Note that he is the leader of GCs, not TCs, that was before the Turkish intervention on July 15th 1974.

We did not have one government then, the falacy that is promulgated across the world and used to justify a full democracy now. You extremists are the spawn of the sickness perpetrated by the likes of makarios on OUR island.

He doesn't say Greeks of Cyprus in the broadcast from Paphos ...

The sub-titles are not correct.

He says at that point in the broadcast...

"Ellino-Kyprao laon"

"....Greek-Cypriot People...."

I remember hearing that speach live, on the 15 th and a 7 year old kid I was perplexed at how fast the beaches emptied and were clear after the broadcast that Makarios was dead.......and that a tank at the Pres. palace had also ran over his limo and killed his brother the driver... For the next five days we all had 6pm curfews, at all major intersections eoka b were checking ID"s, regardless if you were a fellow villager and knew each other since birth. At night we would look up at the fire ignited and growing with each day, by the Tc to mark the beachhead where their fellow Turk s would land at 5 mile beach just outside of Kyrenia. Many Makarios supporters were arrested and imprisoned at the Kyrenia castle. The Tragedy is relived every July 15......

a reminder for the erstwhile experts on Cyprus, the original constitution which was rammed down Cypriots throat in 1960 provided that the GCs voted for the president, and TCs for the vice president. It was natural then that Makarios addressed the Greek Cypriots as they were the only ones who could vote for him.

The Greeks who carried out the coup were US approved officers of the Greek army, people who had proven their anticommunist esprit de corps in the Greek civil war of 1946-1949. All of them had close ties with the Americans, and were trained by them. You people obviously do not have a clue of American control over Greece between 1945 and 1974. It was a mistake publicly accepted and an apology made for it by President Clinton in his official visit to Greece. You guys know more than Clinton apparently, so enlighten us.

Where is this reminder? This constitution rammed down Cypriots throats in 1960?

Here's one example of how Makarios earned his title of "Beatitude" amongst Greek Cypriots. In his speech on September of 1962, at Panayia, Makarios said "Until this Turkish community forming part of the Turkish race which has been the terrible enemy of Hellenism is expelled, the duty of the heroes of EOKA can never be considered as terminated."

This is 1962 friends, not August 1974. You kids out there, don't be fooled about who was the aggressor and who was the victim. Read enough propaganda and soon you believe it.

I wonder why he said that, could it just be that he remembered what Menderes said a few years earlier?

Menderes speech 1955 London Aug
Consequently, should a change in its present status come into consideration, that change must be based, not on ethnic grounds, but on other and far more important and permanent principles and realities, and these can only render it to Turkey.

Turkey wanted Cyprus "back" regardless of what 80% of the population wanted.

This is 1955 friends, not 1963. You kids out there, don't be fooled about who was the aggressor and who was the victim. Read enough propaganda and soon you believe it.[/

So you now have a legal recognised independent entity in 1960 - who gives a damn about Menderes words in 1955! Next you'll do an Orifice or Pratis and talk about 1571 or something like that.....

What rubbish! Would he have been referring to the TMT by any chance?
