Turkish prime minister on Thursday said Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot government was set to sign soon an agreement to build an undersea pipeline that would pump fresh water from Turkey to the northern part of the island.

"I would like to herald that the agreement over the construction of a pipeline to carry water from Turkey to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will be signed during a visit of my deputy, Cemil Cicek, to the TRNC ahead of July 20 celebrations," Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a joint press conference with his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Irsen Kucuk after their meeting in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Erdogan said Turkey and the TRNC also cooperated to establish an online electronic network for the Turkish Cypriot government services as well as in tourism and higher education in the Northern Cyprus.

"I believe that our efforts will yield results very soon and the TRNC's economy will reach to a point with which we will all be proud of," Erdogan said.

Erdogan said the two countries were also negotiating a plan to carry electricity via an underwater cable running from Turkey to the TRNC.

"We will deploy all assets at our disposal to make the TRNC a point of attraction. It is our historical promise to protect rights, freedoms, equality and interests of the Turkish Cypriots," Erdogan said.

The Turkish premier reiterated that Turkey favored a fair and a lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue, adding that the main goal of the ongoing peace talks between two Cypriot leaders was to reach a comprehensive solution by the end of 2010.

"Turkey shares this goal and we will closely watch the negotiation process as a guarantor country. We expect that the Greek Cypriot side will follow suit with the constructive attitude of the Turkish Cypriots. We stand in complete solidarity with the TRNC, which, I believe, will overcome all obstacles," Erdogan said.

I've heard this pipeline story a thousand times, but last year a contractor was awarded the contract and the evaluations of the source identified and secured. Now given it looks like Turkey won't get into the EU because of Germany and France using Cyprus as the stalking horse, therefore there is no Cyprus issue to discuss for them. TCs have already been shown what GCs think of them and what they can expect from their country folk in a unified the island, as in don't expect any summer of love for some time now.

:? You expect Turkey to build a 40 mile underwater Med pipeline?

Some of you are very confused about Turkey’s capabilities… even the RoC has a better chance of succeeding at such a project!

Lets get this straight:

A Turkish company builds a "prestigeous" hotel/casino in the occupied area.
A Turkish company builds a water pipeline to the occupied area.
A Turkish company builds a power cable to the occupied area.

So with all these projects most, if not all of the money will go straight back to Turkey with very little being of any benefit to the TCs.

The beauty of this plan is that if Turkey sends even more settlers across as users of these utilities, not only will Turkey eventually cleanse the north of TCs, but they'll make massive profits to boot.

Sounds like a great cause for celebration.

Palio, what do TCs know of the GC state? Would they not too justifiably call them a rape state, of course they do. Both are justified in their outlook.

Well, if we have no ability to have more open markets we will be more dependent and therefore less autonomous. If this was Turkey's big plan, then GCs are falling right into it. Fact is GCs are forcing Turkey's hand, going into bed with Israel the latest politically, J-Lo the latest publicly. Before we know it and things change on an even more permanent basis we'll have Pratis saying how this was Turkey's plan all along......

Funny how a few days ago I mentioned how 2 regular TCs believed the best thing for TCs was for a veli to come from Turkey. Something I had not come across for years, and only then with TC extremists.

For all your greed of total domination, you will lose more in your pursuit of it.

The Dog and the Shadow - A little something from Aesop

A Dog, crossing a bridge over a stream with a piece of flesh in his mouth, saw his own shadow in the water and took it for that of another Dog, with a piece of meat double his own in size. He immediately let go of his own, and fiercely attacked the other Dog to get his larger piece from him. He thus lost both: that which he grasped at in the water, because it was a shadow; and his own, because the stream swept it away.

Save it to put out the fire on Pratis, he'll combust when he realises another GC plan has blown up in his face.

The economy of the "trnc" is already better than Turkey's, per capita, thanks to Turkey's handouts.!

Erdogan said Turkey and the TRNC also cooperated to establish an online electronic network for the Turkish Cypriot government services as well as in tourism and higher education in the Northern Cyprus.

There's no such thing as a "Turkish Cypriot government" in the "trnc". It is Turkish government, hence the "trnc" (Turkish Republic of North Cyprus). Turkey will be competing with herself in the "trnc".!

With everything coming from Turkey to the "trnc", the "trnc" will have to pay what ever Turkey tells them to pay. No competition means monopoly rules. Turkey will make sure the "trnc" will remain the poor step child to the Turks in Turkey.

In any case, this is all a "pipe dream" of Turkey's ability to engineer anything herself of such magnitude. Just like claiming to be a regional power until Israel shot dead 9 of her citizens on a boat in International waters and all Turkey asks for was an apology from Israel. They didn't even get that. Go figure.!
