Generating Electricity ...

Postby Oracle » Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:41 pm

Does anyone have any practical experience or general know-how or even just good advice about using any electricity generating devices?

Ideally such device would power an average house and be usable in a remote location -- Oh, and not present a fire-hazard! :D

O you mean a generator .. rite!!

is it diesel !!!

if as you said you need one for just a house . average houses deal with 220/270 Volt witch is not a great deal, its tiny amount of electricity, you will need a small generator lets say from 10 KVA depends on how many hours you will use it to 45 KVA ..

if you gonna use a hell load of electricity a 10 KVA will only work for an 8 hours straight

, 45 KVA would be a good choice , last longer, get you a secure electricity source and it wouldnt cost much..!

my dear o, first thing to consider is to reduce the number of appliances that need electricity, so for instance go for gas powered fridge, and of course the usual cy solar water heaters.

then look at green ways to generate electric, with wind generator and solar panels with a bank of leisure batteries and inverters to get up to 240v, all sourced in gb where these things are affordable. use this system for low wattage things you want on a lot of the time when home, like lights, tv, pcs etc

on top of all that you will need a generator for the heavier uses, a 45kva one will more than power a whole house but very, very big and very, very expensive, suggest a 6-7kva silent running diesel one which is big enough to run some appliances at the same time but not all at same time, so don't expect to boil a kettle of water, heat the water in winter, do the ironing, make the toast and run the washing machine all at the same time. again pretty affordable in gb.

O, depending to where you are, solar would be the best choice or even wind generated.

Again all generators how ever the size are loud and noisy unless it's a silented with a canapas ( special material to low down the noise)
7-8 gen is a waste of time because simply you won't be able to run it for a long time, those small gen are for emergencies only
But if you need enough power to run your house as said before you need 10-45 Kva

I would have said go green as bill said but I'm afraid you will have unstable energy source !

As for the quality it matters big time.. You don't need a gen that will break down every couple of months,
So you need to go for brand names manufacturers or manufacturers who use brand names spare parts !
So you can get serviced !!

Or buy a second hand gen ! There is a lot about even tho small gen are cheap when new
But hey why get it for more if u can get it for less.. Right

Also make sure all your lighting is LED based, higher initial cost, but much lower power consumption. An LED equivalent of a 50 watt halogen bulb only uses 10% of the electricity. The also run a lot cooler, so lessens the requirements for cooling.

I can supply these if you let me know what you need.
