Refugee fined for photographing his home in Varosha

Postby paliometoxo » Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:11 am

A FAMAGUSTA refugee had to pay a €500 fine to be released from custody in the north yesterday after being arrested by Turkish occupation forces for taking pictures of his home in the fenced off area of Varosha.
The 74-year-old Georgios Kyprianou, now a resident of Aradippou was arrested at 1.30pm on Sunday by Turkish soldiers after taking pictures of his home in Varosha with his 50-year-old son, Kypros Kyprianou, visiting with his family from America.
The two families visited the perimeter of the fenced-off city now classified as a Turkish military zone when father and son took out their cameras to take pictures from the perimeter.
“As we got into the car to leave, two soldiers came, detained us, then police came. They said the zone is prohibited and we were not allowed to take photographs,” the son told CyBC yesterday.
The two were taken to a police station where the 50-year-old son, holder of a US passport, was released while the father was detained. The son informed Cyprus Republic police immediately who informed UNFICYP at around 5.30pm. That evening the son returned to the north to take medicines to his father.
At around 2pm yesterday, Georgios Kyprianou was taken to court, fined 1,000 Turkish Lira (€500) and released. The refugee pensioner went back to Famagusta to pick up his car before returning to the government-controlled areas.

About 20 years ago my mum and her friend were also arrested for taking pictures and refusing to give soldiers the film in the camera...I know a lot of other people who have had similar experiences...as sad as it is I don't think this incident was related to the guy being GC.

Yes weren't there some Italian tourists kidnapped there, or were they Scandanavian? Three or four years ago.

Yeah I remember that Bill. Not sure why they care, I know a lot of soldiers have been based there...who knows!

My guess would be that they used the town to train the military....

Yes Palio military has own rules always.... Like few days ago your GC MP Mathatis arrested by the GC army for entering into the Greek Cypriots army training site and protesting his own army ..... how about that ? don't you think it is also way of the military mentality? If they have a warning signs not to enter...not the take pictures.... what happens ? they arrest u without question ... like your own army arrested your own member of the parliment. Are u going to protest his arrest too.

"the 50-year-old son, holder of a US passport, was released while the father was detained. "

It takes major sized cojones to detain a US citizen. But bullying those that cannot fight back is OK. The TRNC in its full glory. Have these guys not seen Google Earth. Are they going to blank out the service because is shows pics of my house in Famagusta?

Damn losers!

I mentioned before that I too was nearly arrested in an area between Lapithos and Kormacit. I was taking pictures of the forest there. I was the guest of the moukhtar of the village. The sentry came up and tried to shove me with his bayonet towards an army post I had not noticed. The moukhtar said that I was a TC and not a spy. The sentry insisted that he take me in, that if he did not he would be beaten up by his higher ranking officer. I said I saw no signs and no military camp. The sentry said it was in the forest and all was military area. Other villagers came to my rescue and the sentry sheepishly relented, scared by the numbers and also hoping that he was not seen by his superiors. It was a terrible feeling as I did imagine being beaten up too.

The GCs must have felt a lot worse.
