TRNC President Derviş Eroğlu has described the Greek Cypriot lobby’s efforts, which prevented American Singer Jennifer Lopez from performing in the TRNC, as the Greek Cypriot Side’s intolerance towards the Turkish Cypriots.
The cancellation of a scheduled performance by Lopez at the opening of a hotel in the TRNC caused strong reaction from the Turkish Cypriot People.
The President said that such an action, at a time when talks aimed at reaching a settlement in Cyprus were continuing, was wrong.
Commenting to the Bayrak Radio and Television on the issue, the TRNC President pointed out that Jennifer Lopez was an artist and that in the end she was free to go where ever she wanted.
Explaining that the singer had signed a contract for the gig at the inauguration of a hotel, President Eroglu said that the Greek Cypriot Side’s intolerance, even towards a singer performing in the TRNC, was totally unacceptable.
He warned that such moves only served to deepen the distrust between the two peoples on the island.
He said that the Greek Cypriot people needed to be more understanding and tolerant towards the Turkish Cypriots.
He noted that the Greek Cypriot Side’s preventative efforts raised the concern amongst the Turkish Cypriots as to what the Greek Cypriots could be capable of doing in the event of a solution.
