CANA to organize protest against Turkish invasion of Cyprus

July 12, 2010

PanARMENIAN.Net - On July 20, 2010, the Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) will be demonstrating in front of the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC, to demand justice for Turkish invasion of Cyprus that began on July 20, 1974.

“For 36 years Greek-Cypriots suffer an ongoing Holocaust of our culture, heritage and people. Turkey's crimes include the rape of 800 Greek-Cypriot women, the murder of thousands of Greek-Cypriots, the theft of half of the Greek-Cypriot peoples homeland, the forcible displacement of hundreds of thousands, and the ongoing illegal occupation of a culture, a sovereign territory a homeland,” the CANA said.

“Our protest sends the strong message around the world that, no matter how hard the Turkish murderers, rapists, thieves, invaders, occupiers and their allies try to sell us their Turkish racist bizonal, bicommunal plans: we will never forgive, we will never forget the perpetrators of the Holocaust of the Greek-Cypriot people.”

Vaughan... a word to the wise.

CY's a pretty small place, and there aren't that many CYs or people with CY genes. Some of them post and visit here and there prob isn't a CY around who wasn't and isn't personally effected, you do know this don't you?

If you feel you can't show members a little respect with your words, then perhaps just for the next few days, you might have the humanity and good sense to bite your tongue.

Bill,

Once again I thank you for your concern. Which CF member/s have I shown disrespect to in my posting above? If any of our fellow members are also members of CANA it may be they who need to bite their tongues given the outrageous language used in the article. To refer to present day Turks as murderous rapists gives CANA no credability whatsoever, and is, indeed, hysterical language, not to mention rascist in the extreme.

Mate only trying to help.

The article doesn't refer to "Turks" does it? The bits emboldened where the T word appears are far more specific than that aren't they?

In any event, leaving aside how the article puts it, a reminder of the depth of feeling on this and other events for those associated with CY, particularly consider those where English isn't a first language, who may not be familiar with double meanings.

Outrageous behaviour can only be described by "outrageous language". What are you most concerned about? The linguistic description or the unfortunate, actual, outrageous events?

The press release refers to historical events in very strong terms, which may or may not be justified, that not being for me to say. To continue to use the same language when referring to present day Turks, most of whom having no direct connection with the events described, is outrageous, offensive and rascist.

I can appreciate that. So, back to my usual response to this sort of post ...

How many of the GC members of this forum (worldwide) will be out demonstrating to express their outrage and make their feelings known?

Are there demo's being staged here in Cyprus? I will keep an eye out for any today - we are on a day out and about from later on this morning.

In school we held demos every year at Ledra Palace on the anniversary of the invasion and the anniversary of the illegal proclamation of the "trnc".

There will be demos held this year at Ledra Palace.
