Cyprus President calls for talks help
FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 12.JUL.10
President Christofias has called on the United Nations and international community to direct their efforts towards Turkey so that the road leading to a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem opens.

Speaking at a memorial service of an 18 years old soldier killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion in Cyprus, President Christofias said that “the clear objective is to end the occupation and colonization and restore and safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms of all people in Cyprus, Creek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, with a view to make the people of Cyprus the masters of their land”.

``The solution that we seek must truly reunite Cyprus and its people, institutions, economy and territory on the basis of the High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979 and UN Resolutions on Cyprus”, he noted.

He added that it has to be a solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as defined by the UN Security Council Resolutions which will ensure the unity of the state, with a single and indivisible sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship.``

“This is the clear basis and the agreed framework”, he said, noting that ``this is our side’s painful and historical compromise, this is the only realistic way through which we can reverse the fait accompli of the occupation.``

President Christofias assured that he faithfully defends these principles, adding that ``we are committed to this framework. We will strive to achieve a comprehensive and negotiated solution as soon as possible”.

“We are not compromised with the status quo that mortgages the very existence of our country,`` he pointed out.

At the same time, he continued, “we expect concrete examples on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot leadership and Ankara showing that they share the same political will for a solution with ours and that their words and declarations made from time to time are not just part of a communication blame game.

‘‘It must be shown in practice, at the negotiating table that they abide by the agreed framework. Their proposals must also be reasonable so that they create conditions for achieving a realistic compromise.``

The UN and the international community, as he said, know very well the positions of both sides at the negotiating table.

We expect, he added, both the representatives of the United Nations and the international community to direct their efforts on Turkey so that it finally moves from words to action with a view to open the road for a viable and functional solution.

We will steadily continue to show our determination and spirit of cooperation, President said making it clear that “we want and seek a solution here and now”.

``Not any solution that will simply close the Cyprus problem. But a solution based on basic principles, functional, just under the circumstances and viable”.

We are struggling with all our strengths to heal the wounds and achieve redemption and vindication through the reunification of our country, President Christofias concluded.

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

In other words he won't be told what to do but he wants Turkey to be told what to do.

Turkey needs to be told what to do because it is Turkey along with TC's that are violating human rights Remember. Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and Turkey continues to station its troops on the Island, preventing 200,000 people form having access to their properties and homes.

And if you are British you will know that even your country supports so called UN resolution finding Turkey to be breaching international law by doing so.

Knowing the two faced British government though that means nothing ...... hehehehe wouldn't hold my breath.
