JENNIFER Lopez’ gig in Kyrenia may have been cancelled, but the debate is raging on in cyberspace, with thousands of followers logging on to express their views – and insult each other - on social networking sites.
Over 20,000 people have declared they “like” the facebook page ‘Stop Jennifer Lopez performing in occupied Cyprus’, which is thought to be one of the main influences on the star’s decision to cancel her performance.
A statement on Jennifer Lopez’ website, which has also received abuse and praise on its web forum, said that the star “would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse. After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of her advisors to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region.”
A plethora of smaller groups both protesting and celebrating JLo’s decision to cancel her performance has also sprung up on facebook.
One such group, ‘Yes we stopped Jennifer Lopez performing in Occupied Cyprus’ had 359 members as of yesterday afternoon, while indignant ‘TRNC’ supporters had set up a counter-group, ‘1,000,000 for Jennifer Lopez to apologise to north Cyprus’. It had 38 members yesterday afternoon.
One group was even set up for indifferent observers called ‘We dont give a f*** if Jennifer Lopez cancelled her performance in Cyprus!’ which argued that Cyprus has many far greater problems to deal with at present. It had 92 members as of yesterday.
On Cyprus’ leading chat forum (www.cyprus-forum.com), one J Lo related thread has run to 44 pages of slurs, counter slurs and improbable claims about the history of the Cyprus problem.
In nearly all of the online forums, including the Cyprus Mail’s comments pages, the debates have descended into ad hominem attacks and sweeping allegations against Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot and expat communities.
