SETTLERS OUTNUMBER TC's BY 2 TO 1

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

SETTLERS OUTNUMBER TC's BY 2 TO 1

Postby Bananiot » Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:05 pm

Serdar Denktash complained the other day that the number of settlers now has reached twice the number of Turkish Cypriots. We have dealt with the problem posed my Ms J Lo, what can we do about the settlers, whose numbers will continue to increase without solution?

So when and where is the settler’s gig taking place? Image

Wait. Just like the locusts when they've eaten all the crops and scorched earth has been left behind they will move on to the next place.

The Settlers problem can only be solved with a true solution to the Cyprus Problem.

This true solution would be the one that would give the power to the democratically elected Cypriot government to deport the Turkish Settlers and the power to the Cypriot police to control our ports, airports and coastline to ensure that none (or very few) manage to come illegally to Cyprus.

With the kind of "solution" that you support, not only a large number of Settlers would be legalized and be free to roam the whole Cyprus, we would not even have the power to deport the rest and many more would come through the north coast. Or you think that the "TC constituent state" will deport the settlers and stop more of them from coming? Are you really that naive?

Actually Bananiot, the major problems of your settlers concern was in fact averted when the AP was voted down in 2004. Today's settlers numbers are relatively small to what they could have been had the AP passed.!

One of the (many) costs to GCs of voting down the AP was to give yet more time for the demographic composition of northern Cyprus to be changed against TCs. In addition, given that Turkish 'settlers' tend to politically support the nationalist right, the effect was to make a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus Problem even more difficult and more unlikely.

What more can we say ? No settlement package is ever going to be perfect:the best any side will get is that it is the least bad. AP had big problems for sure, but now a solution is even further away than ever and receding as fast.

One thing is, I think clear, if there is a settlement, the EU is *not* going to oversee a mass deportation of so-called settlers. The only question remains is that of what status 'settlers' and their children will have in a post-settlement Cyprus.
