Little bits of Cyprus outside Cyprus

Postby Talisker » Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:08 pm

On a cool but pleasant morning here in the UK I tended my vine which straddles a pergola at the end of the garden, and built over ten years ago so we can replicate the relaxing times we've enjoyed sitting under same in Cyprus. And last night I used my Cypriot barbecue to cook a delicious meal for the family.

Anyone else who appreciates the customs, habits and pleasures of the island who has their own little bit of Cyprus elsewhere?

My loquat tree with its ripe fruit waiting to be picked up. That will be tomorrow evening with the grandchildren when we celebrate S-inL's 40th A day late. Also the fridge full of watermelon and halloumi cheese.

The best of all is my desktop backgound..................

I am getting depressed

My daughter has four fig trees and an olive. The olive is only six foot tall but loaded. She wants me to make her some tsakistes/Çakistes. The figs, we cannot eat them fast enough.

NO, I live in the pleasent countryside in the uk surrounded by fields, crops and the occasional tractor and passing farmer.
I love it and would bloody hate the place if there was a fragment of cyprus here, so there's your answer to that one!

My parents have a Cypriot Kaperi bush which took one dozen attempts around different locations in their yard. the Ayios amvrosios Chrisomila were not a success as it is a little too humid here and a bit of altitude is needed to freeze off all the bugs .In pre invasion times dozens of varieties were grown in Agios Amvrosios. I also have Lapithos glykolemona - Lemons which are sweeter than oranges. A favorite is my chocolate tree which is a carob tree. The most Cypriot feature are the baboutsosika(prickly pears) which have infested much of the yard.
