Would I be allowed?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Gasman » Fri Jul 02, 2010 7:11 pm

I was told by a GC living here in the RoC (who has a UK passport) that even if he wanted to buy anywhere to live in the North he couldn't on account of him having a 'Cypriot' name. And nor could his wife, who is British, on account of her having a Cypriot name too (his of course!)

Isn't there some restriction on length of stay (3 days?) on GCs going across to the North?

Read that somewhere but it might be out of date now.

I still think it warrants a case to the ECHR instead of seeking compensation to actually get permission for the Court to go live there, imagine if 200,000 refugees did that. Wonder what would happen then and I wonder if their little commission they set up will be closed because they have to implement EU law if the want EU moneys. They can't just take take take and not give

This is exactly why the Turks are practicing racist Apartheid in Cyprus but getting away with it by fobbing it off as some kind of "peace" initiative.

You are on the right track!

Let it be known that no one of Greek origin/ ethnicity/affiliation or tradition is permitted to reside in this occupied region!

It is specifically, racially segregated for the benefit of Turks/Mongols etc but NOT Greeks or their descendants

I don't think you would be able to purchase a property there humanist BUT, do not despair mate, Ban Ki Moon is having a sumptuous property built in the South of the island (perks of position and all that), perhaps he will allow you a small corner if you ask him nicely.

But for God's sake, do not ask him if there was any other reason for his sudden appearance here, apart from the usual bullshit about how he was acting in his official capacity as a mediator, he might wish to deny that he was really on an inspection visit to ensure that his 'Nest' was being correctly feathered.

Humanist asked:

Would I be allowed? to purchase a home and live in the trnc as an australian?

From the Australian High Commission website:

http://www.cyprus.embassy.gov.au/ncos/consular.html

Under 'Services for Australians' section:

Purchasing property in northern Cyprus

Purchasers of property in northern Cyprus may face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus due to claims by Greek Cypriots that much of the land and buildings belonged to them before the Turkish invasion of 1974. Under laws which came into effect in 2006, the Republic of Cyprus made it a crime to buy, sell or rent property in Cyprus without the consent of its owner. An international court case determined in January 2010 made it possible for Greek Cypriot owners of property in northern Cyprus to enforce judgements against purchases within the European Union (EU). Australians contemplating the purchase of property should therefore ensure that they obtain independent legal advice before signing any kind of contract.

Australians crossing from the north to the south may have their baggage searched at checkpoints by Republic of Cyprus authorities searching for, amongst other things, documents relating to property purchases in the north which it deems illegal. If found, the originals of such documents may be seized and used as evidence in legal proceedings against the bearer or others involved in the transaction. There are also strict limits on the value of goods purchased in the north which may be brought back to the south.

Much the same warning that is posted on other High Commission websites (and seemingly ignored by many). So I guess 'Australians' can buy property in the 'TRNC'.

What the situation is vis a vis 'Australian GCs' buying property there is is not addressed.

They will look at at your colour and ask impertinent questions as to where your parents were born and your grandparents. I refused to amswer such questions and was detained by the police for further investigation. I simply said 'what has that got to do with you' and it did not go down well at all. I was ever so polite too. I only had mt EU passport on me btw.
