On the latest info I could find for most popular holiday destinations for Americans Europe features largest with UK at the top, then Caribbean (I can confirm this from when I was there), South America, Central America, Africa, and so on dwindling down with Turkey not even getting a mention.

I can believe that, or holidays to Mexico cancun when I went to America they told me cancun is very popular for spring break and even the us alone is more then enough to see in a lifetime

Sorry Fig, I edited mine above to add a bit of info. I am sure Americans DO go to Turkey. I know they do (an American pal of mine lives in a small hotel over there right in the heart of Istanbul - she helps them out with translations for English speaking phone bookings!)

Just that Turkey is FAR from being a favourite US holidaymaker destination.

But I did read that Turkey has now overtaken Spain as the FAVOURITE foreign holiday destination (certainly for Brits).

My thoughts on the JLo fiasco is - is she doing anything ILLEGAL? If not, it's her business where she goes.

A few people on this forum think I should be hung, drawn and quartered or worse for visiting the North. But I am ALLOWED to, the RoC allows me to. I have nothing to do with the trouble between TCs and GCs. I have both TC and GC friends (both on this side - haven't yet met any GCs who live in the North when I've been over there). Seen plenty visiting.

And, if this is a conscious decision by JLo to appear there, knowing the history (if she didn't she sure does now going by some of the LOOOONG rambling wailing posts on her fan sites from GCs), it's HER decision. Unless her Government or the laws of her country prevent her going or forbid her going (as I am sure they would try to if she was planning to appear in Cuba), and even if she is 'taking sides'. Her decision.

It might keep being said over and over that the 'TRNC' doesn't exist. That there is no such place except in the mind of Turkey. The reality is that, semantics about titles and how it is referred to and who recognises it and who doesn't aside, it DOES exist. Real people live, work, play and breed there! It will not go away if you manage to stop everyone even MENTIONING it!

This is reminding me of small children who think if they put their hands over their eyes, no one can see THEM!

Our friend Vaughan-Williams....

As this is my favourite British Composer too,I immediately feel an empathy with what he writes on this site and I also share his views on subjects such as karma and re-incarnation!I also recommend everyone should listen to the Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and then think again about everything, including the Cyprus problem....
Malatya, now that is also the Turkish name of a very small village next to Lysos,so maybe that's where its inhabitants went after 1974,up to Motidhes? But I don't like that name Ergenekon they have called another village near there-it suggests a nasty fascist para-military group!

To say it was illegal is subjective, not objective. Turkey "invaded" within its rights as a guarantor power. Once you start out with the wrong premise, it may allow credibility where there is none.

You did a bad and stupid thing, giving your money to crooks in exchange for being allowed to trespass on other people's land.

No amount of wriggling can mitigate your misdemeanour, excuse your foolishness, or ease your conscience. You will pay for what you've done, in this life or the next.

I gave no money to any crooks.
My misdemeanours don't need mitigating.
My foolishness doesn't need excusing and my conscience doesn't need easing.

Sorry. I don't believe you.

Anger as Jennifer Lopez set to rock north Cyprus

NICOSIA--Pop star Jennifer Lopez will give a concert in the Turkish-held statelet of northern Cyprus later this month, organizers said on Tuesday, amid outrage among Greek Cypriots.

The US diva will arrive in the breakaway Turkish Republic of Cyprus (TRNC) on a private jet on July 22 ahead of a July 24 concert at the Cratos Premium hotel in Kyrenia to celebrate its opening, said a representative for the Istanbul-based Bozgroup which operates the hotel.

Lopez -- who will be accompanied by her husband, singer Marc Anthony, and their twins Max and Emme -- will also celebrate her 41st birthday at a "special party" following the concert at the five-star hotel.

"There is no cancellation. A contract was signed and she was paid," the representative told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The visit has triggered protests in the island's internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot south which is wary of any move breaking the isolation of the TRNC which is only recognized by Turkey.

A Greek Cypriot rights group Cyprus Action Network of America is running a web campaign urging Lopez to cancel her performance.

"It is with dismay and shock that the people of Cyprus... heard the news that you intend to attend the inauguration of a hotel in the occupied... part of our native country and celebrate your birthday there," said a letter on the group's website.

"Please do not allow yourself to be used by the Turks," the letter added.

But the Bozgroup representative insisted Lopez had decided to go ahead with the concert in spite of the controversy.

"She is aware of the protest. She received an enormous number of emails and she got a little scared. But we explained the situation to her, that there was no war on the island, and she did not cancel the appearance," she said.

The cost of organizing Lopez's visit and performance at the 220-million-dollar hotel, where she is expected to stay until July 26, will be around three million dollars (2.4 million euros), the representative added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the north in response to an Athens-engineered coup in Nicosia aimed at uniting the Mediterranean island with Greece.

The TRNC is only recognized by Turkey, which maintains troops on the Turkish Cypriot side, while the Greek Cypriot south of the island is recognized as the only legitimate administration on the island.
