Poisoning

Postby Selena79 » Sun Jun 27, 2010 11:19 am

Our dog got poisoned yesterday morning in Nicosia, Agios Andreas area. No farming area or similar, the posion was placed just on the street. 2 birds died as well.

Our dog is still in coma after 24 hours. she might not make it. Its a 4 months old mix puppy we got fromt he Limassol dog shelter.

Needless to say that moments like this i just hate all the uncivilized bloody cypriots and i am proud to be from a civilized country where such things cant happen.

Based on previous expereience with the police i am quite sure that they will do exactly nothing. This even despite the fact that opposite where they placed the poison 2 toddlers play on the street every day.

Any advice is welcome.

So is it now safe to assume that the USA is NOT a civilized country where 'such things cant happen. '

Or do you want me to post a string of links about animal abuse world wide?

Poison being put down to catch dogs is well publicised on almost any 'information about moving to Cyprus' websites, in their pet forums.

The only thing you can do is be VERY vigilant, avoid some areas altogether, muzzle your dog when out with it if necessary and NEVER, EVER, let it run free off the lead.

It used to be that the left hand, stoney side of Curium beach was one of the only places where you could take your dog near the sea. But some years ago, not only was poison being put down in that area (and warning signs put up about it), but a couple of dogs were shot there too.

You either can or cannot live with the animal cruelty in Cyprus. You cannot make it go away overnight. You cannot avoid it either. You can do what I do and have done for years - work with some of the sanctuaries and animal charities and support them financially too (it is almost all Brits who do this).

The malcolm cat sanctuary moved its premises after poison was chucked over the perimeter fence some years ago. The volunteers turned up the next morning to find about 40 dead cats on the ground.

So it is not just street dogs and stray cats that are targetted, some people seem to just HATE ANIMALS here.

I live near the tourist area of Larnaca. Last week someone shot a pigeon out of the sky from the verandah of their apartment - in the middle of lots of apartment blocks and pools.

I am used to pigeons being killed as part of vermin control programmes in the UK countryside. I do not mourn a pigeon. But to be shooting them in a built up area?

A retired NZ farmer friend of mine visited last year. He was hit on the arm, whilst photographing the beautiful old Church in Pervolia by a ricochet from a bullet fired at a cat from a house opposite. Fortunately, as a farmer, used to using guns, he didn't die of shock there and then! His wife was more upset that the idiot didn't manage to kill the cat anyway - just paralyse it and someone else had to come out and put it out of its misery.

This was on the day they were flying home after spending 2 months here. They refused to come to the police station, not wanting to spend their last day like that. When they left, I complained to just about everyone, giving full details of the incident. I didn't even get any replies to my emails.

Here is some 'civilized' British animal abuse.
Be warned, some heartbreaking pics...

Cap. There is terrible animal cruelty in almost every country in the world if you care to search for info about it.

But do you really think that pointing that out is going to make someone whose beloved puppy has just been poisoned feel better?

Or are you saying it is OK for Cypriots to put poison down to kill dogs because other countries do it too?

Gasman, my problem is when people paint the entire population of Cyprus over an isolated or a spate of incidents.
They make it out that ALL Cyps are heartless, cruel animal hating thugs and that such incidents don't occur in other countries.. 'such things can't happen'

interesting mentality - a person rightly upset and distraught that a member of a supposed higher intelligence should go around poisoning animals and inflicting such horrendous agony on an animal.
mentions that she hates all UNCIVILISED CYPRIOTS and comes from a civilised countery
First two posts asking which country is that??

it isnt isolated and it isnt a spate - it happens reularly ALL over the island and its not all mindless ...
Look at gasmans post..
last year where i live a stupid young idiot was shooting sparrows off a telephone cable in july , not even the "hunting season" and the pellets were coming into my garden, we live in a built up area and we had visitors at the time. i went round to the house and he ran away..but he knows im watching him now.
