International Calls from Cyprus

Postby alkor » Thu Jun 24, 2010 11:32 pm

Hi all,

Thanks for the wealth of information on the forum.

I was looking to coming to Cyprus in the near future and was wondering how the telecoms infrastructure worked there, specifically with regards to international calling.

Is calling abroad from a landline cheap, although this is not so important as when at home, I imagine I will normally be able to communicate via Skype or similar online programs.

It's more calling abroad from a mobile telephone. Do the mobile networks offer plans where they give the customer say for £30 or equivalent 600 cross network minutes that allow you to call people on other networks using your inclusive minutes, in the way we have in the UK? Are there then any cheap routes to call abroad from the mobile phone?

Get SKYPE free and then go for one of their 14.95 a month unlimited overseas calls packages.

Are there any local access numbers that allow one to make international calls for the cost of a local call, like we have in the UK, which would allow me to make an international call from my mobile in Cyprus for the cost of a standard call?

alkor there is no comparison between UK mobile call prices and Cyprus mobile call prices. If you are coming for a short stay invest in a cyta sim card when you arrive and use your mobile, the prices are probably about a fifth of what you would pay in the UK for international mobile calls.

I've come across this local number from Poketalk: 77788021, which claims to allow international calls at the cost of a local call from the networks. See here: www.poketalk.com/cy.

Has anyone used this service?

I've used the similar service they provide from the UK and it is very reliable and does only cost a local call, so I imagine this would be the same.

I've now used this number from Poketalk and can confirm that by it is included in the mobile phone packages from Cyta and is charged as a normal local call and allowed me to call back to the UK for the cost of a local call, which is really amazing.

Hope this can be of help to other forum users.
