Gas reports confirmed

http://www.cyprusweekly.com.cy/main/92, ... 9750-.aspx

NICOSIA - Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides has confirmed press reports from Israel that there were huge deposits of natural gas in a plot next to Cyprus' exclusive economic zone.

In statements on Monday, Paschalides said ''it is indeed believed that there is a huge amount in the Israeli plot but we cannot confirm or dismiss the amounts, because they have been revised a couple of times.''

Replying to questions, Paschalides said common exploitation would not be discussed, adding that the signing of agreements on the exclusive economic zone was pending. ''We want these agreements to be made with Israel and other neighbouring countries, as was our aim from the beginning,'' so that each country could make its plans.

To other questions concerning Turkish efforts to obstruct the process of determining the exclusive economic zone, Paschalides said Turkish officials have been making statements for years. ''We know our sovereign rights. We do not provoke anyone. We do not change our plans and we proceed,'' he concluded.

Interesting angle, never considered Turkey's recent focus on Gaza could have a geo-political component that incorporates the energy component reconfiguring foreign relations. One to keep on the back-burner.

Gasman:

"Turkey's recent focus on Gaza could have a geo-political component "

If you had known that at the same time Turkey was conducting a naval exercise on off the west coast of Greece, near the islands of Kefallonia and Zakynthos, and also that a group of five Turkish frigates and a tanker were set to sail around the Mediterranean, reaching as far as Spain, you wuold have known that there was a geopolitical component in everything Turkey does in the area.

Turkey also leased F16 jet fighters to Albania. Turkey is looking to get seriously slapped in the face one of these days. Those that plan strategy in Turkey should look up the history of Iran in the 70s. The similarities are alarming.

Agean rock outcrops - really who cares!
Albania?
Turkish frigates bobbing around the Med - who are they going to attack?

Turkey like Iran - c'mon, Erdogan only holds his post due to stability, economic growth and bringing down inflation. Turkey suffered badly with Iraq sanctions, fears the same could occur with Iran, currently $10bn annual trade with a view to increase to $30bn, if I remember right, and probably good concessions on gas supply to take it off the fickle Russian teet. IT'S THE ECONOMY MATE.

Erdogan is supported by big business, risk revenue or potential for, risk everything.

With this in mind, I thought the Gaza issue made sense under the geopolitical economic perspective. Basically it would be interesting to see where the support would go if Gazaians get independence and the rights to the resources off their coast.....

Note: Turkey has not been an aggressor for decades in many areas it may have looked to take an interest in. Turkey and Israel have resumed military coordination etc.
