Memo to leaders: don’t push your luck

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby boomerang » Sun Jun 27, 2010 10:09 am

te annan plan apart from all the shortfalls would have exported all te bullsit from the occupied to the whole of cyrpus...

if the tcs wanted unification since the annan plan, they know exactly what is required...

but since nothing was achieved the last 3 years it points to me they only supported the annan plan because of the disquised confederation...

All these 'reasons' given for why the majority of TCs voted 'yes' to the Annan Plan. Doesn't it ever occur that they were given two choices - vote YES or NO. And YES simply seemed to be the better choice for them?

I'd be interested to hear 'reasons' why some GCs voted YES if it was such an obvious and total bad plan for them. Because they didn't ALL vote NO did they?

My Uncle and his immediate family voted YES to the Annan Plan. They despised it but voted YES out of fear of US reprisal. Their thinking was that if we did not accept the plan the United States would recognize the breakaway North and all would forever be lost.

Thanks. Interesting to hear their reasons. I know some GCs in Cyprus who also voted YES. Interestingly enough, they used to be very pro US back in those days. They saw the US as Cyprus' greatest friend and ally - couldn't believe that the US was in any way complicit in the Turkish invasion when the news became well broadcast here. (It had been talked about on the internet for ages - but these are very old people and they don't have computers or internet).

I know some who were intimidated and had their homes and cars vandalised for displaying pro Annan leaflets (they said the response from the police was 'what do you expect?') And others who say they were too scared to vote yes - and too scared to tell any other GCs they were for it, so didn't vote at all.

I can see CLEARLY why the majority of GCs voted NO. But there were still 20odd % who voted yes. Their reasons are hardly ever seen discussed anywhere.

I assume those who didn't bother to vote at all on such an important matter must have been content with the status quo at the time and not wanting it to change in any way?

Now as i understand it both Papadoplous and Christofias agreed to the Annan plan. papadopolous put his signature to it..
Then both changed their mind , well papa did and then Christofias did afterwards. They didnt even try to renegotiate the proposals after they reversed their decision or use it as a base to start fresh talks.
Wasnt it suggested a better deal would be wrought from Turkey once Cyprus was accepted into the EU.
well from where i stand 36 years have passed and nothing has changed.
and after 2011 (i think) there are no more applications for restitution being accepted. but i stand to be corrected.
And the government still tells people to wait.
So where to from here? with recent rulings much has changed and appears to have thrown the plans of the government awry.
And still the Refugees (the original ones) live their life daily with the site of their Famagusta home visible..with quiet diginity and resignation.
With all the posturing who thinks about them anymore.

The situation we have today is far worse than the AP arrangement. The situation we will have in the very near future if the problem is not resolved and Turkey does not become a full member of the EU will be far, far worse than the AP arrangement. Some thick heads do not yet understand that we are not in a position to dictate terms to the international community and that we can only opt for the best possible option. But, these thick heads do not live in Cyprus and see things from the comfort of their armchair where ridiculous, patriotic words, do not cost anything ...

Why don't you play it safe by moving to Turkey?

No need, because Turkey is here. Those that have brought Turkey to Cyprus are now doing everything in their power to keep Turkey here for good. Do you think that we suffer from short memory? Do you think we do not remember the bastards that brought Turkey to Cyprus? Do you think we do not remember their patriotic jargon prior to the invasion?

Boomerang, damn money, if this is what it takes to bring peace to Cyprus, then let it be. It is the less of my worries. And, if you believe bash fascist Christodoulou about the cost of solution, too bad.

why not ask yourself Why didnt the annan plan include one man one vote, a true federation, a direct vote for president, why were there aparteid elements that reduced Gc living in the Tc constituent state as third class citizens ??
